But you wouldn't want to put that in practice, would you?

After all, the Dutch are just a band of peaceful traders, am I right? :mischief:

Sure, but you know the old saying: "If you want to live in peace, prepare for war"... ;)

BTW: this time we constructed something more peaceful:

    89? Shouldn't your turn have been 90A?

    EDIT: Never mind.

    Prepare for war indeed!

Fed up with aggressive Dutch settling on the continent, the Ottoman sultan Murad VI puts the Dutch ambassador on the last ivory ship to the Netherlands with no clothes and a formal declaration of war burnt onto his back.

Six Ottoman regiments of cavalry and infantry disembark from the the Göke and the Muavenet-i Milliye northeast of New Rotterdam, and prepare for an assault against the "garrison" of the town. Meanwhile, a band of infantry traveling overland under the leadership of Ibraham Pasha seizes the iron mines northwest of the town. The war council debates plans of how to fully eradicate the smelly Dutch from this continent.

BTW: I hope this will set an example for the game of DoWing upon entering their territory.

Mijnher Appelmans, Consul of the Dutch Republic, protests sharply against this act of violence against a small and innocent civilian settlement! For now we have to yield to brute force, but "we'll be back".

Sometimes I just love my advisor:

    Ain't she smart...?

Seeing their position hopeless, the Dutch commanders ordered that they put New Rotterdam to the torch. The trapped citizens are burned alive according to Dutch "custom", while those that try to flee to the welcoming Ottoman arms are viciously cut down by Dutch soldiers. Out of a colony of 36 000, 7 survive to start a new life in the Ottoman republic, freed from the Dutch tyranny. All the while, no Ottoman soldier used their weapon. A bizarre spectacle, to be sure.

Ottoman cavalry reach Neu Amsterdam, which is defended by the infamous Swiss Guard. Bets are placed among the Ottoman commanders about how long it will take them to torch their own city.

It doesn't have to be this way. Senior Ottoman diplomats are sent to Amsterdam with industrial-grade noseplugs offering the following terms:

    - The King of the Netherlands relinquishes all claims to the continent of the Ottomans, and agrees to recognize Ottoman and Byzantine sovereignty over its entirety.

    - The Ottoman Sultan relinquishes all claims to the continent of the Dutch, and agrees to recognize Persian and Dutch sovereignty over its entirety.

    - The King of the Netherlands agrees to either abandon or hand over to the Ottoman or Byzantine Republics the following cities: Neu Amsterdam, New Utrecht, and New Eindhoven.

    - The King of the Netherlands will provide 200 gold, payable over 20 turns if necessary to the Ottoman sultan as reparations for the war, which was caused by an unbending and arrogant policy of attempting to colonize lands claimed by the Ottoman and Byzantine republics.

Shameless propaganda lies! As is well-known to the rest of the world, there weren't any "Dutch soldiers" present in New Rotterdam! It was a purely civilian settlement of peaceful Dutch colonists trying to make a living in the "new world". The truth is rather, that the brave Dutch colonists decided that, before falling into Ottoman slavery they would rather die for freedom! Women and children have been sent back to the Netherlands on the last iron transport ships that were able to leave the harbor. The men volunteered to form the rearguard, to destroy everything that might be of value to the Ottoman agressors, and then to sacrifice their lifes for the defense of our Fatherland!
Their sacrifice will never be forgotton and shall not have been in vane!

So now you want peace already? Has the first sight of a Dutch soldier in Neu Amsterdam already given you so much of a scare? Ok, if you want peace, here are our terms:
    • You restore New Rotterdam to its former state (including harbor) and hand it back to the Netherlands
    • Free Chemistry as reparation for the caused damage
    • 100g as compensation for the broken Ivory deal

Signed, Lanzelot, Stadhouder van de Verenigde Provinciën

The siege of Neu Amsterdam continues, and a Dutch worker is captured. These ones weren't as afraid of living in Ottoman luxury as the citizens of New Rotterdam.
