I was under the impression that they only banned examples of entertainment that was subversive, not necessarily banning entire forms of entertainment wholesale.The Soviet and Chinese communist regimes placed a lot of controls on what was and was not acceptable entertainment.

I would agree with that.Those were the best of the best in their day though. There's a ton of crap today and there was back then, but if anything, I'd say the volume of quality programming is actually increasing, although perhaps not at the same rate as the overall volume of programming.
