The map generator is NOT random...

Is it?

I've tested this. I like to play as Alexander, but just ONCE I would like to get some stone so I can build the mids.

Out of 35 map regenerations, I got stone: 1 time.

Using Kublai Kahn, however, with whom I do not really need or care for stone, I ran 35 regenerations and got stone 21 times (one time I got TWO stone plots).

Coincidence?
I doubt it.
Why is the map this way? Is it scripted to give phi leaders no stone?

It was my believe (Never checked) that starting positions does depends on leader. I could be a function of starting tech or trats, I am not sure. Again, I never check it in SDK, but from my expirience.

It does not mean that it is broken, it just mean that civs have flavors :)

YE, try the same with Inca and you find stone or marble more than often...

or start with Monty and you´ll be in jungle...heh

Also what I found out in my OCC regeneration proces is that certain leaders more often get a coastal start then other leaders. So I do think yes some things depend on the leader.

I AM playing on fractal.

And yes, I have also noticed that some leaders start on the coast more often than others. This kinda miffs me, I really think that the map should be random.

If you switch the resources to "Balanced" then EVERYONE get's stone, and marble, and copper, and all that jazz.

That's a little too much for me, but I just don't like the prospect of being doomed to never get stone when I play as Alex. That's annoying.

Eh, maybe just try to get over your wonderlust. Much more fun to just build up armies and take all the wonders.

I never tested this but did find the same thing. I alter leaders, start a game and if things look pretty bad or boring early will restart using the same leader. I find certain leaders are always on the shore, Hyuana almost always is near MArble, maybe stone, Ghengis always has horses that can be settles near the capital if not within the capital, Mansa Musa usually is near lots of gold. Nice for me but when I meet this civs early on I know what I am infor (tribute Ghengis before he attacks, Mansa musa had a large tech advantage and he will cottage spam, Forget early wonders with Hyuna uless you can get them out fast (industrious or near stone/marble).

Don't know about the resources, but I do find leaders with fishing as starting tech do see more coastal start, which I generally don't like. I agree I want a true random start location, and also genuine random leader assignment. Mansa in half of the games is just annoying.

I'm pretty sure the leaders play into this. I tend to play the same kinds of leaders and almost never have ivory in my fat cross, sometimes not even within a 10 square radius.

I always have mansa too.
In fact, the usual crowd seems to be this:
Mehmed
Mansa
Tokugawa

Monty
Izzy
HC

Those six probably make fully 3/4 of the leaders in all my games.
In fact, right now I'm playing a game with Mehmed, Mansa and Toku, all on MY continent.

I really think that in the custom game screen there should be an option for resources:
Standard
Balance
Random

How hard would that be?
Also for starting location:
Standard
Balanced
Random

I have also noticed that your selected leader's traits do seem to impact what resources are around you or rather were your settler is placed. I like Augustus a lot and I always seem to get great resources with him. Does anyone else find this with him too? In my latest game with him (monarch, continents) I had copper in my first two cities and later discovered copper in the BFC of my capital, too!

I think that starting location should be random or at least option for that. I have too often Toku my next neighbour and it is very annoying especially in Warlords when he is protective and aggressive. It is not so easy to capture his cities.

I almost always have at least one warmonger civ next to me, and often two. It's a real pain in the ass, actually, but it's forcing me to learn to fight more effectively. Interestingly enough, I tend to think that the aggressive/warmonger civs are actually a lot closer to how human players act, where it doesn't matter if you've been allies for hundreds of years -- they'll attack you anyway just to "win the game."

When you start the game, immediately send your first Warrior to steal Workers from one of the warmongers. Then, when you have Axes, finish him off. Makes you very strong and gets rid of a threat. That's my standard opening now.
