The Panama Papers: Hackers Reveal Law Firm's Many Tax Haven Clients

The logical conclusion of this argument is probably to immediately kill yourself.

Only if your only value is to live a world absent financial corruption among political elites.

Because you are not invest in your own country and thus can't be accused of making investments that influence policy making.

But your company is investing in your own country, is that not what an off-shore account would allow you to do? Or am I totally misunderstanding what you're trying to say here?

That all just sounds like business as usual to me. I guess what I'm really asking is: Why does this warrant any greater level of outrage than any of the other day-to-day corruption that takes place throughout the world?
No, your gist is right. We should have been incensed about this before. We've all known forever that global elites were stealing from their people. I even helped a Nigerian price get millions of dollars smuggled out, and then laughed about it.

I guess the big difference is that now we have names. It's less of an amorphous villain, and the ability to find and punish real villains with real evidence.

poor man's crime - taking stuff that belongs to others
rich man's crime - not handing his stuff over

Not so sure it counts at this level of wealth. At this level of wealth, tax is indistinguishable from rent paid to the owner of a property out of which you do business.

This leak is just scratching the surface.

It's also not been very long since the data was leaked, right? Who knows what people will be able to turn up with some serious research, connecting the dots and all that. Run-of-the-mill corruption and tax evasion are totally normal and expected, but if specific names turn up in connection with stuff like arms sales to rogue states or evading sanctions hopefully you'll see some more outrage, since people are apparently more motivated by nationalist identity politics than by a vague sense of injustice.

Re: the US election, of course Clinton and Obama supported the Panama free trade deal that has exacerbated these issues considerably while Sanders warned that it would make money-laundering and tax evasion easier.

Look, Commodore, by your very same argument we shouldn't have law enforcement at all.

The PM of Iceland just resigned after having his calls for a snap election denied.

I'm frankly surprised that he thought, even for two seconds, that he wouldn't have to resign.

His storming out of that Swedish interview seemed like he knew, but didn't want to accept that he'd have to resign. As for the other major democratically elected world leader, what about the Argentinian president - has there been any calls for resignation there?

Why does this surprise you? Every scummy individual with significant power and wealth ain't going down until DA POLICE or military decide it's time for them to visit the big house.

P.S: Going lunch break back to my job at the BIG SCARY LAW FIRM. Will funnel money to anyone on CFC by request.

No you don't funnel money to us, that's the entire point!

He's a human - God hasn't yet made a creature better at lying to itself.
But humans came up with politicians. :p

Nyet! Calls for a public explanation.
As far as I know, the company he was involved in was some sort of investment vehicle for a project that never took off. He also wasn't a shareholder, just a director, and claims never to have earned any dividends or any other sort of payment. The company was dissolved in early 2009, roughly a year after he first took office as mayor. Apparently (so they claim) the legal requirement at the time was for the actual shareholders (i.e. the president's father) to declare their share in the company and file tax returns, which they claim to have complied with. Have fun reading if you like.

D'ya wanna buy some deathsticks?

Not at all. All I'm saying is people have to get it out of their heads that the system is working for them. It never has, and it never will so why waste time getting upset over it? The best you can do is try to do whatever you can to become one of the elite.

Take a shower to get clean. You get dirty again. Doesn't mean you shouldn't take showers.

Agreed. It seems as though there are some people who think this will allow us to take a shower that will prevent us from getting dirty ever again.

I'd wager decent money that the Iceland PM didn't actually break any laws; which is the bigger problem to be honest.

So what happens to all that money once the politicians resign? They get a luxurious retirement spending it?
