the profanity problem

I have absolutely no moral problem with swearing, but it does bother me when it is used on a forum or in writing. When you swear during an actual conversation with someone, a combination of the environment, social situation, body language and tone give the word meaning. When you swear on a message board, all of that is missing or at least diluted, and so the meaning is likely to be lost or misunderstood.

One time I heard the word fart bleeped out on TV.:hmm:

I think the situation's fine.

Maybe it was preemptive bleeping or they mis heard it...

And I agree with what Moss321 said.

this reminds me a bit of the times in the US when a lady with a breast tumor could not describe ti any better thatn 'a pain in the stomach' to her doctor, because all the other terms available weren't acceptable as they were considered vulgar.
the stomach was between chin and belt, anything below was 'ankle', IIRC.

I once had a thread about peas.

Talking about peas, a female pea is called a pea-hen. A male pea is called a peacock.

Of course the last word was censored to pea****.

Edit: Oops, it is not censored now. VB3 obviously has an improved pattern-matching algorithm.

Am I correct in assuming that the only "bannable" words are those that are autocensored?
Nope, wrong. Anything profane, vulgar, scatalogical, obscene, sexually oriented.

yeah, like peacock. he does the peahens, after all, sexist guy!

I had to make a real effort the other day to use the word "bottom". It wasn't just the fact that I had virtually exhausted my entire vocabulary by the time I hit upon the socially acceptable. It also changed the tone of the post making me sound like a prissy housewife or a sinister deviant. Sort of like I was using the words "collateral damage" to describe the bombing of a hospital to soften the terrible reality. By using the word "bottom" to describe my "bottom" I felt that I was misrepresenting the true nature of my "bottom" to the O.T. community. The word "bottom" conjures up pictures of hobbits relaxing in the shire, smoking their pipes whereas I really needed to use a word that conveyed an impression of Mount. Doom and the smellier parts of Mordor.

If you wanna swear just come to the chatroom. Sure you'll get (auto)kicked but you can come right back ;P

Obviuosly the bleeping didn't help much, did it?

Yes, especially since there's no other (commonly used) word that could have taken the place of fart.:p;)

Apparently I'm not allowed to take the Lord's name in vain now either!

These rules are ridiculous.
I think you're being even more ridiculous.

We've warned posters continually (including you a few times) - the problem persists. So it's obviously on to the next level of action. As simple as that.

I don't wish to have my posting time here, reduced to issuing pointless warnings that nobody will take heed in any case.

That's why you don't warn, you just hit the ever popular ban button. Saves time and warnings...and reduces stress on fingers.

Surely you can be permanately banned from the chatroom?
No, I don't think so... :hmm:
You can just sign up as a different name.: ;)

Ya know, ya can swear all ya want in Civ Multiplayer! :mischief:

I'm kind of disapointed by the restrictions simply because I use (or should I say, used) swears for humor, not malice.

And we have a chatroom?

We only have 6 words on the auto-censor list at the moment, so the answer is obviously no. There are dozens of curse words and slangs out there.

Just use common sense while posting and you should be fine. :)

Edit: Added like 10 bad words to the censor list.

In theory, yes, but I don't think anybody has ever been banned from there for more than a few weeks, at least while I've been there (at least one ban was supposed to be permanent, but it didn't stay that way).

EDIT: And as far as profanity goes, what is the matter with it unless it is used in such a way that it may be interpreted as flaming? I only very rarely use it on the forums (I can't remember the last time I did), but what's the problem if it's used in a humorous way?
