Round I - Gaining Ground (4000BC-1440BC)
Hello, fellow CivIVers. Despite having lurked around this forum for quite a while, I'm still playing at the Monarch level I started in. So this thread marks the beginning of my (and, hopefully, yours too) development. My quest, through these threads, is to someday be able to stand up there with TMIT, Neal, aelf and all those masters of Civ. We'll be playing all kinds of different maps, leaders and settings, too. It's a long, hard, painful and yet rewarding journey - but we'll do it together.
Thus, I present to you...
The Quest for Deity!
("That makes it QfD, doesn't it?" "Yeah, but that sucks, so we'll make it our little secret)
Well, talk only gets us so far. Let's get into the action. My 7 year-old brother picked out a number from 1 to 34, which got us...
Oh yes. Darius I of Persia. Organized makes running huge empires a lot cheaper, while Financial makes cottaging the heck out of any map much more profitable.
A quick look at what distinguishes Persia from any other minor nation: The Immortal Unique Unit and the Apothecary Unique Building.
The Immortal, IMHO, is the best rush unit in the game. Getting it soon enough to face garrison Archers is usually easy, and getting a 50% bonus against them just makes the job easier. The UB, on the other hand it pretty average though - unless you're just swamped in unhealthiness, it's generally not worth building in your non-commerce cities.
Oh, and the map, you ask?
Our very own, beloved planet Earth This is the Earth34 scenario. Here are the settings:
So, for a start, Persia gets a pretty nice capital spot. Plenty of food and production, 2 stategic resources (one of them a happiness resource, which is awesome). I'm thinking about settling 1N - I hate settling 1 of the coast and I we don't really need anything in the sea yet either. However, as far as expansion goes, we're blocked by Babylon to the west, India to the east, water to the south and useless desert to the north. So... what do we do? (more directly, who do we rush?)
Anyway, I attached the starting save below. Be sure to load the 34civs mod, here:
