Last week, a monstrous storm system (pictured) decided to pop down out of Canada and rapidly deepen over the midwest. This storm system, as most low pressure systems of its kind do, dragged a massive cold front across the entire eastern half of the nation (you can see it in the picture, it's the "tail" of the storm). A cold front, in basic terms, is a massive swath of cold air, that these low pressure systems tend to pull out in front of them (due to the counter-clockwise rotation). This cold front led to 1) Storms, and 2) Cold, frigid, Canadian air. This storm system, one of the strongest in history, (it was the second strongest non-tropical system ever recorded in the U.S., it's minimum pressure was 953 mbar, i.e. the same strength as a decent Category 3 Hurricane) is what brought the sudden change in temperature to you, and everyone else on this side of the country. Of course, these types of low pressure systems are normal for this time of year, it's just the size and magnitude of this system was worth mentioning, rather than just "it's autumn".
