The Royal court of the Kingdom of Merlot

To His Majesty, and any others,
first of all, I am new to this so if I have posted in the wrong section or I am doing something I shouldn't please correct me and I'll know not to do it again ;) .
I have noticed that the King does not appear to have a coat of arms. It would be fitting to make one for the King to represent his supreme might, power and wisdom, if this has not already been done.
If you do want a coat of arms for our King, then perhaps the King should decide what images he would like (it is HIS coat of arms, after all).
If it has already been done, or is being worked on, then please ignore me.
And if you are bored or hate my idea, then feel free to say so and ignore this suggestion.

Yes, our surroundings aren't the most conducive to early-age blitzkrieging. ¬_¬

Firstly, our glorious Mayan serfs are cut off on an island, we're just about to get a galley, and then there's the fact we have the Vikings and Carthaginians on their own islands to the South and the Persians and either Indians or Dutch to the North..

Lots of early powerhouses. :(

Welcome, Sir Snaker! :)

Lots of early powerhouses
If you say many are strong, then aren't they then fairly equal in power, since all of them are strong? From what I've read so far, although this is just me thinking aloud, I think that there may be others who are probably in a similar situation to us and therefore I don't believe aggressive behavior is in the forefront of these teams' minds, since they know it would cost both sides a great deal without any guarantee of success. But, I could be completely wrong since I've just began to learn of our current progress.
And if I may inquire,
where do I find out who is who exactly? I know that indiansmoke I is our glorious King, of course, but I'd really like to know who is in charge of what.
Many thanks,
Sir Snaker

It would be helpful to have a Team <-> Nation list for both reference (my pre-senility keeps kicking in, and I have to go dig in the team lists to see what team is what nation.. bah ;) ) and newcomers. Would someone be so helpful as to perhaps create such a reference for us? :please: I seem to recall that I found such a list somewhere in the main forum - but I'm totally unable to discover where it has been mummified and buried..

Oh - nevermind on that one. It appears my grave-digging skills just got a skillup! :D

Many thanks!
and the only real navies to speak of currently are fishing boats.
I think our island acts as a natural line of defense too, much like the English kingdom...the island of Britain acted as a natural defense against the French.

I offer my service to the King and whatever I can do to contribute please let me know. I am also willing to assist current Imperial Specialists if they so desire it.

Both good points. If not used properly, even the best defense will fail. All defense (and offense) must be used properly in order for them to succeed. If you have a man with a sword attack a man with a gun, the man with the gun has the better equipment, but if he doesn't even know how to turn off the safety he will not succeed.
I believe a certain Sun Tzu covers this
I'm not recommending we rely on our island for defense, I am merely stating it is helpful to us as natural protection.
On a side note, one thing we may all want to consider is a strong navy - if we control the seas, it will make it very difficult for our enemies to invade us (although they will fail because we have a godly King and they do not).
But I am not the official strategist for our armed forces, and I'd welcome the insight of the King on this matter. For it is his voice which truly matters!

Yes, naval power will secure our Island, and allow strikes on theirs.

However, I do not believe the wars shall be won or lost at sea.

The islands can only hold roughly three cities each (four at a pinch), so everyone will seek the sizeable mainland for livingspace.

I have little doubt that it is there that the fate of this world shall be decided.

As I understand it, our island cannot be invaded until Astronomy, as while our galleys can cross ocean in our cultural bounds, our opponents' galleys cannot cross ocean within our cultural bounds.

So to me it looks as if our defence policy should focus on the mainland until it seems like someone's getting close to Astronomy.

I didn't realise that it worked like that.

Is there a risk we could lose access to the mainland if someone settle the coast near to Merlot Island?

Yes that is correct.

@ Potenzo, securing the mainland in front of us is top priority of course.

If my memory serves me right, also Open Borders with the landowner allows people to move through ocean before Astronomy. That shouldn't be an issue, however, if we have all the coastal areas around our isle under our control (which we should have). Actually we do not need to have any more soldiers in our home island than is absolutely necessary for crowd control, until Astronomy is within grasp of our foes. By that time, if we cannot defend ourselves sufficiently I would say we are doomed.

Not in BtS....coastal tiles only until Caravels

Yes, I agree that the mainland is a priority. I was just stating that a few of our cities can benefit from this natural defense.
We must be very cautious of mainland settlement, mostly in regards to other civilizations who no doubt have a very similar agenda to ours. As such a strong military presence should always be in any mainland city.
And we should consider the implications of founding cities adjacent to other island nations. This will block off their natural expansion area, but it will also anger them for such a deliberate act. Perhaps we should negotiate with other nations (that we like or don't want to fight) to agree on borders between our nations - of course make it more beneficial for us if possible ;)
But all of this is up to the King, it is his decision what to pursue.
