"The setup has detected that no version of Sid Meier's Civilization 4 is installed.

This update requires that a previous version of the application be installed."

Hello there. Above is the error message I'm getting when attempting to update from version 1.61 to version 1.74. I have absolutely no idea why because despite the error message, the application IS installed on my computer. :)

I bought and downloaded Civilization 4 from Direct2Drive, so it's a virtual copy which I suspect could be the problem. Additionally when installing the game using the download version, the default path and the path I originally installed to was "C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization IV\". However since then I've come to suspect that this was also wrong and it was actually supposed to be written as a "4" instead of a "IV". Whether this really matters or not, I have no idea.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling using both path names as described above. I've tried updating directly from the game menu and by downloading the patch file from 2 different websites. I've tried moving and running the patch file from various locations on my hard drive from the desktop to the Civilization 4 folder and I've even tried running it from my Windows folder. I've also tried updating all my software including Windows, DirectX and drivers. No luck. :(

Also the reason why I'm trying so hard to update is because I bought and downloaded the Warlords and Beyond The Sword expansion packs from Diret2Drive yesterday, and it says I have to update before installing them. :(

Ideas anyone? Thanks a lot!! :D

P.S. Woot, my first post!

I have the same problem but I have a retail version CIV IV. The direct2drive patch would not be correct then and the retail patch is not working either. I get the exact same error though.

Thanman

Sorry, but I've fixed it now. I completely uninstalled Civilization 4 and downloaded it again from Direct2Drive which had the new patch included and it worked fine. :D

And GVBN: One of the websites that I downloaded the patch from was Direct2Drive. Sorry, I should've mentioned that in my original post.

So I still have no idea what was wrong with it, but oh well, it works now! Thanks anyway. :)

And good luck Thanman.
