The Spanish Riding School: Haut Ecole for Warhorses

Draw some lines on the map so I have some idea of where I think the next towns are going

Turn 108 (175 BC)
Shift the archer training at Madrid to a settler and change the barracks at Seville to a worker. There are enough archers on the ground right now to deal with the visible threats Move the archer on the elephant camp down the road to tempt the warrior out of the woods and it works. One more down.

IBT:
While defending, Archer defeats (2.04/3): Barbarian Warrior

Turn 109 (150 BC)

Then move an archer into the trees marked for the next city and find a barb warrior and axe to the north. The settler will have to wait in the woods. Looks like they were making tracks towards Seville. Maybe I can distract them.

Get an axe but lose an archer. And the barbarain warrior is not scratched

IBT:
While defending, Archer defeats (0.48/3): Barbarian Axeman
While defending, Archer loses to: Barbarian Warrior (2.00/2)

Turn 110 (125 BC)
But it is time to battle it out anyway. So here goes
While attacking, Archer defeats (3.00/3): Barbarian Warrior

That was painless so the settler moves forward

IBT:

Turn 111 (100 BC)

Found Seville

And the advancing archer finds another black axe

IBT:

Turn 112 (75 BC)

The archer gets whacked by the axe but at least cuts him down to size.

Turn 113 (50 BC)
That warrior at Madrid has to step one way or the other and when he does he is dead as soon as he hits the open.

The barbarian at Madrid steps toward town and the archer steps back in. The axe at Seville now resembles a pincushion.

Turn 114 (25 BC)

Archer promoted: Shock

Barcelona finishes: Worker who immediately humps off towards Seville to get some wood in the worker.

Did somebody say something about "You are a backward people"

And the barbarian at Madrid is now stickered
While defending, Archer defeats (3.00/3): Barbarian Warrior

Turn 115 (0 AD)
Archer promoted: Shock

IBT:

Turn 116 (25 AD)

Turn 117 (50 AD)
Tech learned: Construction

Madrid finishes: Settler who steps off to the west under cover of two archers.

More not so good news

Turn 118 (75 AD)
Research begun: Currency
Barcelona finishes: Barracks

Turn 119 (100 AD)
Barcelona begins: Archer

The archer westbound from Seville whips a warrior in the woods then steps back to town.

There is a barb archer coming in behind the warrior so there must be a barb town out there somewhere.

The well fortified warrior at Madrid whups the barbarian and gets promoted (Combat I)

Turn 120 (125 AD)

Whomp - up
grahamiam - on deck
Kylearan - made us safe(r)
Admiral Kutzov - made new friends(?) and didn't forgot to train a settler
Bede - got another town down and killed a couple three more barbarians.

Oops...I got it. :)

Pre-turn: Move the citizen in Seville off the wheat as the barb archer will likely move there next. Lose a coin doing so.

IT Axe moves north towards Seville along with archer. Start a Elephant in Barcelona and a settler in the capital
1. 150 Move our units into Seville and a shock unit onto the forest in front of the axe. Send down another unit from Barcelona.

IT Our shock unit 0.8/3 holds off the barb axe and our drill II archer 2.6/3 in Seville is nearly flawless versus the barb archer and promotes to city I.

2.175 Move two healthy archers out of Seville with the settler.

IT all quiet...too quiet. Chop finishes at Seville and start rax.
3. 200 Workers at Seville start roads first so they can beeline if need be.

IT a barb archer approches our settler stack. Saladin cancels our open borders.
4. 225 Homer in a faraway land. Ah cripes our work boat is in no man's land. Abandon the boat because it's stuck and neither Toku nor Saladin is willing to talk about open borders.

IT archer axe near Seville and settler stack.
5. 250Homer born in a faraway place. Fortify the settler stack on a forest

IT Archer combat I gets attacked on a forest by barb archer and promotes to shock . Axe moves towards Seville.

6. 275 Hinduism spreads to Seville. Whack an archer for stepping onto flat ground. Move an archer out of Seville to the forest.

IT Our shock I archer defends 0.8/3 on a forest versus the axe
7300 Plato born in Damascus. Establish Cordoba and start a cat. The archer that took the flatland archer gets a shock I promo. Fortify him to heal.

IT
8. 325 Quiet turns with a couple warriors approaching Cordoba.

IT
9. 350 War Elephant finishes and heads to Seville. Seville begins a library (feel free to change). The capital can either work the cottage for a settler in 3 or a forest for 2.

Summary
We've got a long way to go techwise. The AI is at least 5 techs ahead. Ikes.

Here's where the barbs are coming from..

We really drew the very end of the stick with this one. It feels like we are all alone on our icy little island while everybody else shares their space with more than elephants, cows and smelly dudes from the backlands. So we get no help with barb supression.

I think we have pretty good handle on the island now so building workers and settlers makes sense. We definitely need more cottages built around our new cities. They can sustain the growth with lots of fp's and grass. What are we going to do with the forests near the capital?

For next research should we go alphabet and see if we can get some trades going?

This game looks like it could be similar to Kylearan's "no research" game. Lots of outdated units with cat support taking on some of the meanest SOB's in civ4. Not only did Bede give us raging barbs he gave us the Romans, Arabs, Japanese and Incans....not the most agreeable folks on the planet.

Yes, but only the Inca are a real threat with their financial status. Getting to Abet and Lit quickly is a very good idea.

Something evil we may want to consider is getting caste system soonish and getting to representation as well. A really evil trick is to grow several cities really large with farms, create all the citizens as scientists, starve for one turn, then resume normal operations for 10 turns till the starved person grows back. Rinse and repeat as necessary.

But cottages and farms are huge for this, plus settling more of our land would be a good idea first.

that's a new one for me. :salute:

Preflight check:research @ 90% on Currency (24g in bank, -7gpt)
Toku is way ahead. Up Alpha, Mono, Monarchy, Sailing, Currency, IW
Saladin is up at least Currency.

Looking at the map, I can't really think of a good spot for the settler that's due in 2T. Hopefully, I'll see something inspiring in the thread or I see something new.

IBT:The archer in between Cordoba and Seville defends against 2 barb warrior (2.3/3).

T1: 375 AD Dinged archer heals. I'm really searching for a spot. I guess we can go for the copper, but that spot seriously stinks. Maybe s of Seville is better as it'll get the horses. Of couse, I see a barb axe coming from that direction :)

Start moving workers so I can get a more direct link between the capitol and Seville.

IBT:Mardrid settler -> archer

T2: 400 AD Our Elephant heads out into the brush to deal with the axe.

IBT:

T3: 425 AD Settler heading W.

IBT: Axe kills combat1/shock archer in forest (0.8/5)

T4: 450 AD Move Elephant to confront Axe

IBT: Elephant kills Axe (8/8), Archer kills Warrior (2.9/3)

T6: 475 AD Elephant gets a shock promotion. I'm sick of these freakin' axes. Also, the barbs have build a town to the W, near the copper. Looks like we should definitely settle towards the horses. If I can get there safely...

We now have a road heading westerly out of Madrid. Start planting a cottage on the plains river tile.

IBT: Madrid: Archer -> worker; Seville rax -> archer

T7: 500 AD Elephant kills the axe (4.4/8), found Toledo on grass/river, 2T N/1T W of horses.

IBT:

T8: 520 AD nada

IBT: shock archer kills axe while defending in a forest (1.4/3)

T9: 540 AD I give the archer a medic promotion and have him heal in place. He's 10/10 XP but another barb warrior is heading our way so I want to give the 2nd shock archer some fast healing if needed.

IBT:

T10: 560 AD I'm roading towards Toledo for reinforcement purposes only. The worker near Seville can run back torwards our coastal town after the barb warrior suicides on the shock archers.

Another worker in Madrid will be done in 2T, once the worker finishes the chop. That city could use a library. Research is down to 60% (+4gpt).

Figgered that was what happened, no harm, no foul. Play on!

IT: I forgot if it had been mentioned already, but...Toku has Alphabet. And he is...ahead of us. Uh...a little bit.

Strolling through the cities, I'm not sure why Cordoba is building a catapult. It might be useful to capture the barbarian city (although chances are that our war elephants might be able to handle it on their own), but Cordoba is a newly-founded city and has no infrastructure yet, not even a barracks. I think it's better to produce our units in matured cities, so I switch Cordoba to granary instead.

I switch Toledo from barracks to granary as well. To catch up, we must bring our cities up to speed as fast as possible.

After Currency, I started us on Alphabet although Toku has it already - the others do not, so maybe we can still do some trading. I propose doing Sailing next, as some of our cities could benefit from a lighthouse, and we might need galleys to expand more. After that, it depends on what the AIs have, I think. We might want to get Priesthood soon, for temples and to generate a great prophet for the shrine.

I whipped the granary in Cordoba, built several cottages at Seville and two farms at Toledo because it has no food resource. Also, I built a settler and founded Santiago one tile north of the eastern cows. If we later irrigate the grassland south of the cows, the city will be able to work two hills and should be a decent coastal producer.

Our war elephant, escorted by our medic archer and another archer, has moved to the barbarian city and already killed two archers. There's only one archer left, so we should be able to raze the city next turn (I don't think we can wait until it has reached size two to capture it - it has no 2 food tile to work).

Lots of great people where born everywhere, and the Colossus and Chichen Itza were built as well. We are dead last in score... :crazyeye:
