The thread title was misleading! I thought this thread was to discuss the Flag!

The Star Spangled Banner is also the name of the national anthem.

Whitney Houston's is generally regarded as one of the best. I personally prefer an instrumental version to a vocal one, though. Although I did find Billy Joel's performance last night to be more tolerable than most versions.

My all time favorite was WWE ring announcer Lillian Garcia, recorded at the taping of Smackdown! ON September 11, 2001.

I have to agree that Whitney Houston's rendition was far and away the best I've ever heard. I still get goose bumps when I hear it.

Marvin Gaye's version is pretty awesome too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRvVzaQ6i8A

Just as long as the singer doesn't do all that lilting, warbling, I'm-a-pop-diva vocal aerobics pap that so often passes for singing the anthem (even by men), I'm fine with it. Short and to the point is the way it should be done.

The version posted in the OP sucks IMO. She pronounced too many words in a very weird fashion.

I don't like to hear the "Star Spangled Banner" sung by a degenerate.

The best way to hear it is when children (chorus) sing it (voluntarily).

Children have the unique ability to harness emotion like no adult can. It's not about textbook exactness, its the pure heart that a child can put into something that makes it worth while.

I remember that, but I think it would have been Smackdown on the 13th. September 11th 2001 was on a tuesday.
EDIT: Smackdown was normally taped tuesdays, but that one was cancelled and broadcast live on the 13th. I think it was also the first televised stadium event to take place after the attacks.

I think pretty much any version sung in the first days after 9/11 would be the top version for me (a Canadian). That's when it had the most meaning.
