I hit Post Reply too early so I lost a few pics here. Here is the most important: the overview shot and the save ~

3100map4hb.jpg

I tried for Fishing>Husbandry>Hunting and Warrior>Barracks for about 6 turns>Worker at pop2. Hunting comes due in about 5-6 turns, the worker comes in the next turn. Perhaps we should start up to Priesthood after hunting...that was my myst-hunting dilemna.

Geebus, Mao has 3 sea resources?!

2nd city should be near the gem resources, hook them up for financial strength. I'd like to grab the horses with the third city.

Sounds good to me. I'll settle Orleans on the neck of land between the two lakes. The city won't grow very quickly, however, until we get Iron Working. Hmm... Perhaps we would be better off founding Orleans near the Horses, and take in the Gems with our third city? (Anybody care to draw a dot map?)

Decisions, decisions...

Oh yeah. I downloaded the save, and will play tonight. Fifteen turns or twenty?

The lines indicate areas where we should want to settle in the future, depending on the rest of the surrounding terrain

1. Pholkhero >> just played
2. Lobsterboy >> UP NOW, 20t
3. JerichoHill >> on deck, 20t
4. SpriteSODA >> 15t
5. Frankcor >> 15t

100 turns = first Roster Rotation

then, 10t thereafter

Due to the variant, I recommend we expand aggressively towards our neighbors. We're not going to be able to get land peacefully otherwise.
I agree. Nobody will be north of us, so we can wait on that, but i think goig towards China and America w/cities 2 and 3 are a good bet...

Green may be crummy, but it's on a hill, and there's *probably* another resource nearby.

Red, true, will not grow fast, but fast enough w/the pigs to whip some things there that we'll need.

Blue is good, but needs a border pop to get the rescources. however, farm a grassland and work the forest adn we'll have enough for the whip.

Yellow, good, but not directly towards any of our neighbors...though i'm sure someone's directly east of us.

It didn't mention this in the report. (Sorry, I was in a hurry before work.) We also met JC, Washing and Izzy. She founded Buddhism. I, of course, made peace with them.

we need to get bronze working before finishing the oracle so we could take MC for free.
I'd like to set it up so that we can take either Monarchy, Feudalism or Machinery. We can grab MC, and then chose either Monarchy or Machinery to research and grab the otehr tech w/the Oracle. If we go mining>BW>myst>med>priest>etc., that may take too long to get to Priest. Perhaps, go to Priest, then mining, BW, MC...cutting it close, but we ARE surrounded by lake tiles and they can be worked for the 2 commerce when we need it.

Word.

What are thoughts on an overall set-up strategy?

I've got the following down

1) Expand towards Chinese and Americans with cities 2 and 3. Backfill cities 4 and 5 to nab important resources.

2) Get a galley up and explore the world...looks like there is alot to gain from coastal commerce.

3) Maintain a sizeable enough military to prevent too many demands

1) and 3) i like. 3) will be good so that we don't have a lag from our declaration of war at first musketeer, and the assembly of an army.

Now, 2) -- we are on a lakes map  so we'll have to wait on that one a bit

One of the problems I have with point 1) is that we have to accept Open Borders with any civ that asks. Therefore, we most likely won't be able to prevent the expansion of the AIs by controlling key choke points. For this reason, I think we should plant our cities to grab the most valuable resources and deny them to the AI. For this reason I think we should grab the Gems and Banana now rather than later, and to hell with the initial poor city growth. Originally, I was going to put the city on that neck of land between the two lakes, but now I'm thinking South of the of the western lake might be better (maybe there are additional resources to the West.)

I like expanding toward close neighbors b/c then it's your city near their capital rather than vice versa

edit: added quote, for post clarity. I think we should settle near them, regardless of OB or not.

The gem city is till on the way towards them

Well, sure! But when you talk about expanding aggressively towards our neighbors, I thought you meant dropping the second and third cities on their doorsteps.

I dont agree with choking the AI because they will open borders and settle near our core cities and thats not good.

A dot map:

Red and Yellow - Red is better, but maybe we want to prevent us to build all cities in a line, so Yellow is an option.
