The Veronica Mars Movie funded $2.5 million in one day. I remain fascinated by this for some reason. What happens when something with more mainstream appeal (read: not a videogame) asks for fan support? Because if this goes really far, could a Firefly or a Community be far behind?
And then there's the added wrinkle of distributor involvement. These super-Kickstarters tend to happen because of an established name like Tim Schafer or Kristin Bell. In the latter case, Warner Bros. still holds the license. Does it defeat the purpose of paying the creator if the marketing department still wants to make a profit?
