SWISS MERCS ALL THE WAY!!! Its almost impossible to kill one in the early middle ages, and barely possible for cavalry in the late middle ages. Best defensive unit until the rifleman.

lol almost impossible and barely possible are the same thing. what im trying to say is. Its got hella defense. :)

I am aware of that, and I like the Ansar as well.
However I see the UU in connection with the civ that possesses it, and to me it seems that China in general is a better warmongering civ than Arabia.

China is definately a better warmongering civ, so I tend to have a bias towards Riders too. ;)

I was just thinking about the Ansar Warrior...

When you're Iroquois, you don't want to discover knights, so you can keep building mounted warriors for half as much, only 1 less attack. Mounted Warriors rule.

C3C Cossack. Three attacks. Almost instant promotion to elite. Many Great Leaders will follow. Can dominate warfare for almost an age and a half.

I also vote for Mounted Warrior. Part of the reason it's so great, in my opinion, is that there's an empty spot in the fast-attacker progression. There's a long time between horseman (2-1-2) and knight (4-3-2), which begs to be filled with something like a cataphract (3-2-2). The Mounted Warrior fills that spot nicely (3-1-2) and gives the Iroquois an advantage for many years. I have experimented with adding cataphracts into the game, and they pretty much made Mounted Warrior worthless.

Immortals are truly immortal, excellent for increasing your borders early in the game. (that iron can be very evasive though...)

the 6 attack isn't so powerful( esp. against pikes), so if it attacks 3 times without healing, the cossack will probably be dead

If the Iroquois start next to the Aztecs( which is 90% likely if you do culture rel. start), the mounted warriors aern't as powerful, they can't retreat when attacked by other fast units (jags) so they could be a waste of shields.

6 against 3 is very powerful, not even factoring in artillery or retreat ability. If you have cavalry and all the other guy has is pikes, then you get to take over their entire civ, no problem.

Pikes seem to have an extra bonus against cavalry, sometimes you can kill them easily with Med. Infantry, but not cavalry

Dromons are good! When I am the Byzantines, the coastline of my enemies in a barren wasteland. If you think the Dromon isn't good, its your opinion. I think Dromons are one of the best units of the ancient age.

Pikemen do have a bonus against cavalry, which is why I include some MDI with my knights.

I am not sure if swiss mercenaries get a bonus... :hmm:

But I think Mounted Warriors are pretty good, especially if your lucky enough to get horseback riding from goody huts. But agaist zulu impi and jaguar warriors they aren't as good because, again, they cannot retreat...which makes impi mediocre, that horsemen cannot retreat after attacking.

I'll agree that they are good in limited early game situations...but they are not the best. If that is your opinion that's fine - good wholesome debate :D .

Certain defending units in Civ 2 had advantages vs mounted units (horses/chariots/elephants/etc), but I'm not sure if it's in Civ 3...would someone clarify this?

None of those units have a bonus against mounted units anymore...I think only the pikeman has the advantage now

Is it advantage vs all mounted units or just cavalry, and what kind of adv. is it numerically?
