I see someone has been on the cartographer's guild ;).

My only comment here is that the mountains/hills are too harsh, specifically the hills. I am trying to think of something that might help that--maybe lower the opacity of the pattern overlay? Perhaps use a different layer/pattern blend mode?

As for the font: I love it. It works really well with the vividness of the map (which, btw, is why the forest textures work so well).

:D As I said, I have spent hours on the site. If you are a member, add me as your friend.

Yeah, my mountain texture is very different from the forest textures I found. I have tried lowering the opacity, but then I thought they were too light. I could try some kind of blur?

I'm glad you like the font. It is Garamond. :)

I don't like adding both hills and trees since many trees grow on hills.

I appreciate that, but I think it is implied that there are trees on most of the hills and mountains. They are forested, except at the highest elevations (which are shown in bevel). That is why I put a lot of trees around the mountain ranges, and why they blend into them.

Including trees by themselves makes sense to me because I am attempting to convey large forests that are lower in elevation to the higher regions.

What hill texture are you using? The default photoshop one? Why not look here to see if there is a texture you would not mind switching out for--I don't personally use them, though, because I am more a fan of maps with symbols. Though half the fun of making maps on photoshop is looking for patterns/elements in general :)

(Also bummer about the useless photoshop issue. I was in the same situation, though with my tablet. I had bought it a while back and never ever used it because I gave up on art school. Cartography has seen me finally put it to use!)

edit: Also what edition of PS do you have?

Wow, nutranurse: Thank you for giving me something else to look through next week at work. ;) I could spend hours there. I'll check it out and maybe find something to replace. No, the one I use now I got off of Cartographer's Guild (like all my textures).

I am on CS4 now. I bet having a tablet is great for making maps and other fun things. I can't remember perfectly, but flyingchicken might have used a tablet to make awesome character portraits in the first Sekai.

I took your advice and lowered opacity, plus gave a bit of a greenish blend around the edges to further imply that the hills and mountains are mostly forested (except Edgelore, which is basically a giant mesa!).

Much better! The hills aren't as jarring anymore. In fact that would be decent enough to play on. Let us play on it now >:~C

Using some old ChaNES map-dev stuff, some shamelessly pilfered preview images from Wenchell Chung's commercial map, an artistic reworking of the base-map used therein (and on the Wikipedia Milky Way page) and some processes learned during of that stuff, I've made this (25% full-scale):

Which actually kind of looks like a galaxy and (using the two top images) can have notable astronomical objects accurately positioned.

I'd like a 1910 map. Not in Symphonic style please.
