Unfortunately theres just no way we can avenge across the sea when we didn't even start with a coastal city! it's too little, too late for Iraq. The nuclear strike from Iran hurt us bad. We spent way too much time trying to grab an extra tech and didn't get nearly enough score boost from that! We can only hope that breaking free from the USA will jump our score big time!

It does not do it immediately and even then you cannot possibly score higher than country who is also free but looks stronger than you.

I have ended all deals with Russia and still can't get out of Vasselhood. I can't declare war on Putin. Everyone loves him he is on great terms with everybody.

Maybe if I rename Kazakhstan as Ukraine, would that help?

Actually there are three ways to stop being a vassal: The easiest one is to deny your master tribute when he demands it, but this requires the AI to ask for tribute from you in the first place. Putin would also lose his vassal if he himself capitulated to a third civ. And finally you can cancel the deal in the trade screen if you fulfill certain criteria, like having 50% of your master's pop and land or something like that, I don't know the exact numbers at the moment. Considering how huge Russia is this isn't really an option for you I'm afraid.
