The World At Arms

The World is a fragile state in the year 1910.
The Civilization World in 1910

Part One: Origins

So, in 1910, the world grinds to a smashing halt. It all begins as Germany forms an alliance with the United States' rival, Japan. This raises tensions to a near breaking point, and although the US and Japan are in a peace treaty, they are also in an arms race. Since 1905 when Japan announced to the world it's intent to become a Communist state, the US and it's allies (UK, India) have been keeping an eye on Japan.

Worse, Germany announced it's intent to become a Communist state also. This heightened tensions between the 5 nations as other nations, Egypt, France and Russia looked on. Little did I know at this point, very soon the world would be at war.

Open hostilities began in the middle of 1911, when Germany, in a surprise move, backed by Japan, invaded India.

Ah, Crap.

This absolutely meant war for me and the UK. I knew instantly the UK would not turn up immediately. The US was already stationed with a 45 troop strong force in bases around India. To help with war efforts, I grant a donation of 5,000 gold to India and the UK. German troops take the city of Bombay from the Indians. In 1912, the UK troops begin to commission.

My planned invasion route. I'll name the Indo-US-UK alliance as the Atlantic Treaty. Our invasion route will have to take us through Egypt, and I get a right of passage with them.

Germany's army is mighty by 1912, and as you can see on the invasion route... they have a lot of strongholds.

Next turn, 1913, I begin my invasion of Germany. The Egyptians steer clear as my infantry, a lot of them, march across their lands and cross over into the German empire. The Germans put up a fight, and I lose a few infantry but their troops are no match for the power of the American army. Five strongholds were destroyed in the opening stages. UK troops ignore my invasion plan (probably because there's no way to tell them the route) and invade a little way down from where I invaded. They get decimated. At the end of their battle only 2 troops remain!

In 1914 Japan declares war on America, India and the UK. I won't begin an invasion of Japan until my army is completely ready for such a task, and It'll be a while. The UK sends more troops to Germany, and this time they beat the Germans. The German army is pushed back further into their mainland. The war is looking to be over soon.

Oh how wrong I was.

By 1915 I've landed several more troops on the shores of Egypt to invade Germany, and the Japanese still haven't made a single troop movement towards our borders. What a great ally choice you made, Germany.

I know this is a silly question, but do you have Vanilla, Play the World, or Conquests?

Location of Russia, with Japan and overseas United Kingdom bordering.

Part Two: Russian Interest

Russia had been in a state of perpetual turmoil since forming a Democracy. While this idea at first was supported by both Russia and the US, Russia quickly hated the idea of a democracy, however did not want to go into anarchy. It was already to late for that, as many times the Russian government had descended into Anarchy over revolting cities.

The Russian government was looking for ways to expand it's empire. At first they had looked into these areas:

However, revolt and a declining economy prevented the Russian government from expanding. Worse they received a letter from the Emperor of Japan:

(I'm using the letter thing because I can't take screen shots of the diplomacy table. I know they don't say that and you can't buy islands - but what the heck.)

And so, the Russian government stopped looking into the islands.

In 1915, years into my war with Germany and, soon, Japan, the Russian government looked into interest at areas in Germany and contacted me.

I let them have parts of Germany, for 84 GPT. Russia soon after declared war on Germany. THE WARS NOW ARE:

United States
India
United Kingdom
Russia
vs
Japan
Germany

Now only France and Egypt needed to be dragged into the War, for the World to truly be at War. But that didn't take long.

Russian settlers and troops soon began to arrive in 1916, and soon began to colonize parts of Germany, however their government was not yet toppled.

Part Three: Germany Falls and Japan Mobilizes

If I was Germany, I'd kill the emperor of Japan. It took Germany's government falling for Japan to finally realize the Germans might need a wee bit of help.

The Japanese army -- the Sleeping giant as I like to call it -- mobilized in 1917, a year after the Germany government fell into allied hands.

Map of Germany as of 1918, With areas claimed by the Russians

I sent more and more troops to Germany with the pending Japanese invasion. The UK strengthened their strongholds and Russia continued to send small amounts of troops, as well. It's fair to say I was feeling okay about the pending invasion. But I shouldn't have been.:cry:

D-DAY NOVEMBER 12 1920: (Got a little creative with the dates :) ) With a hugely strengthened force in both some territorial parts in India and most of the troops in allied-controlled Germany, the Japanese send their navy and troops. Overwhelming numbers of troops. Russia is quickly defeated, and soon thereafter the UK is, but eventually the Japanese invasion force is destroyed. I took major heavy losses, with only four infantry remaining.

The Japanese invasion, opening stages.

I immediately mobilize more troops. Japanese troops regroup and prepare for a second wave, as do I.

CONTINUED IN THE NEXT PART.

Yeah I know... I could use a USB, but with the amount of turns I have each time, and the screen shots to each turn and then sorting them out would take to long and I'd jumble them up...

Part Four: What The World Didn't Expect

In 1921, in a move I didn't expect (and at the time didn't necessarily want) was the Russians to sign a mutual protection pact with the French. (I forgot to put this in last post, but the Russians signed a peace treaty with the Germans soon after their arrival.) Undoubtedly, the Russians would soon get involved in this war again.

Location of France

And how right I was, the Russians did soon get involved in the war again after an incursion into Japan, which actually cost Japan dearly and they lost Nagasaki to the Russians. France then declared war on Japan.

The second wave of attacks on Atlantic Treaty troops in ACG occurred 1922, but -- again -- they lost. Half of Japan's army had been destroyed by 1922 and with the soon advancing French army, they sure wouldn't be around any longer.

The wars so far:

United States
India
France
Russia
United Kingdom
vs
Japan
German insurgents

Now only Egypt to make it a world war.

Anyways, in 1923, France launched their full scale invasion of Japan.

Lets say, it was a Pyrrhic victory for Japan. They successfully repelled the invading force, but lost overwhelming numbers of troops. This was my time to move.

The massive amounts of troops tread across the desert into Japan and overwhelmingly succeed their mission and capture many cities, effectively remarking Japan on the map as:

Yeah... :p

Part Five: Egyptian Worries

At the time of playing this game, I didn't exactly want a world war.

This got me concerned over Egypt, a country that has had on-and-off alliances with Japan and Germany. This would either put them off coming to their aid or will make them come to their aid.

Should the latter happen, this will require a full retaliatory response upon the Egyptian empire. (From JFK's 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis speech, a crisis that will soon be in this game. :mischief: (I use that smiley too much... :mischief:)

Egyptian navy movements during 1924 to 1925.

In the 1924 - 28 stage, the war with Japan and Germany was entering the sporadic fighting stage, instead of full out war.

In 1926, Egypt announced it had renewed a peace treaty with Japan. This got me worried. In 1927, Egypt announced an economic trading deal with Germany. I was more worried by this stage.

In 1928, Egypt signed a mutual protection pact with Japan.

World War.

Part Six: A World At Arms

So, with Egypt about to come to the rescue of Japan and possibly Germany, the world was now at war. I didn't want Egyptian forces to reach the shores of Japan, so I regrouped my troops and began the most complex invasion of the entire war.

The very complex invasion.

Units in battle:
Navy Group: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo
Infantry Group: Alpha, Bravo
Transport Group: Alpha, Bravo
Artillery Group: Alpha, Bravo
Settler Group: Alpha

I had the most powerful Navy in the world and just enough units to commence the invasion as planned. Egyptian navy hadn't made any moves, if any at all. Troops on the ground in Egypt were minimal, most were in Overseas Egyptian territory, maybe they expected me to invade there.

In 1929, the invasion still hasn't happened, I'm still regrouping my troops.

D-Day 1930: The invasion begins at approximately 4:50 AM local Egyptian time, with Atlantic Treaty contingents Navy Group Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta and Echo forces attacking Egyptian navy strongholds and losing minimal troops. Transport Group Alpha makes it to it's destination before Transport Group Bravo, everything is according to plan. Navy Group Echo is attacked by Egyptian boats, but wins. Transport Group Bravo reaches Egyptian shores and Infantry Group Alpha begins it's advance into Egyptian territory. Artillery Group Bravo also begins attacks on Egypt. Infantry Group Bravo and Artillery Group Alpha commence attacks on Egyptian lands. Settler Group Alpha begins work on Forts, Cities and roads.

The most complex invasion of the war is a success.

Part Seven: Operation Red Fire and Operation Blue Lightning

In 1931, after the successful invasion of Egypt, My scientists discovered planes (???) and I immediately began construction on seven. Settler Group Alpha of the invasion force had established three 'military' cities in Egypt. The planes were complete by 1935, and in between the four years only sporadic fighting with Egyptian military in their mainland happened. Now it was time for the bombing of Egyptian overseas territories.

Operation Red Fire, 1936

Operation Red Fire

Operation Red Fire was the tactical United States bombing of overseas Egyptian military strongholds. I launched the planes in 1936, and they successfully bombed their targets and none of the seven planes were lost. The bombings reduced the military in the region for the imminent allied invasion.

Operation Blue Lightning, 1937

Operation Blue Lightning

Operation Blued Lightning was the Atlantic Treaty invasion of overseas Egypt, which was a successful tactical, decisive and strategic Atlantic Treaty victory. The poorly trained Egyptian army didn't stand a chance, as the overwhelming numbers of troops rolled onto Egyptian shores.

Egypt surrendered 1938. :mischief:

Part Eight: Cuban Crisis

In 1939, the world was again only at sporadic fighting. Egypt had been defeated on their mainland and overseas territories, German soldiers stopped, Japanese troops quashed. I didn't think it was possible after I'd surrounded most of their cities, but Japan managed to commission a transport with a settler. I considered stopping it, but I wanted to see where it was going.

What would ensue would be the biggest crisis the world had faced.

The Japanese ship reached Cuba, an American island leased to India, in 1940.

Location of Cuba.

India was prepared to trigger an immediate war and end the cease-fire with Japan under these circumstances:

1. Any event which includes Japanese military attacking any property in Cuba;
2. Anything that might lead to the separation of Cuba from India;
3. Any event which involves Japanese settlers forming Japanese soil on Cuba

Will lead to the IMMEDIATE TRIGGERING OF WAR WITH THE JAPANESE EMPIRE.

And so, the crisis unfolded.

My immediate reaction was to impose a Naval blockade of Cuba, as to prevent more Japanese ships coming in.

India sent their fair share of Navy as well.

In 1942, Japan formed a city in Cuba.

The Japanese city in Cuba.

This, as India stated, was one of the triggers for an immediate war with the Japanese empire. In 1942, the Indian army was weak, because of skirmishes with German partisans. I negotiated a Indian-Japanese cease-fire again. The world was again at a stalemate.

In 1943, Japan began to expand their cities in Cuba.

Two more cities. I was basically letting Japan get away with it's expansion. Ah dammit, what to do.

In 1944, India declared war on Japan.

Ah dammit, what to do.

This means my war with Japan was surely reaffirmed, and so, I began an immediate invasion of Cuba. Didn't go as I planned.

I got decimated. Probably should have used planes.... :wallbash:. I immediately send four planes.

(Is it really worth drawing a map?)

The planes bomb and destroy some Japanese targets, and using the same route (late at night here in New Zealand; 1:53 AM; can't be bothered drawing a map :) )

Atlantic Treaty troops successfully invade and overthrow Japanese Cuba.

That really was the most intense crisis. :dubious:

The Civilization World in 1946

It's a little big and has a lot of writing, so I'll explain it a little further.

The Indian Mandate of Egypt is territory which was conquered by India's Atlantic troops during the invasion of the overseas territories, although has not been internationally recognized. (I know you can't 'recognize' territories, but it's a fun to put them in the story :mischief:  Gotta stop using that damn smiley!)
This is also the case with the French Mandate of Japan.

Cuba is not marked as Indian overseas territories, because I'm leasing it too them. (Civ 3 equivalent of selling India trade which comes from Cuba.)

We can also see the Russian Overseas territories, now officially recognized.

The Economy of Egypt is a very fluent economy, and has been gaining speed on world economics since allied intervention. It relies largely on Trade, but a small percentage of income comes from domestic sources. Strangely, it is not the US that is trying to stop this (focusing more on Germany and the economies above) but India.

That concludes the Demographics report for 1947.

Part Nine: The World At Crisis Point, Part One

The world -- technically still at war -- now set their sites for peace. The first such event since the beginning of the war occurred between Germany and Russia; however; this was only the beginning of a world crisis.

Lcoation of German military strongholds in A-C-G as of 1948.

Not knowing it was the beginning of a crisis, I slowly resumed control of Germany to the German government. (however, still implementing my economic plans for Germany) By 1949, the German government was in control of most of Germany, however it was still considered a threat.

At the turn of the decade, and most of Germany in German hands, the German government announced a 4 year economic deal with Russia and the construction of 'German military protection' in overseas Russia. I should have seen this was the progression of an alliance with Russia. But I didn't.

In 1951, Germany reaffirmed relations with Russia, in a trading of oil deal.
By 1952 the German economy has been reformed, mainly with support from Atlantic Treaty member states.
In 1953, in a major world event, the Democratic Russian Government is overthrown by a Fascist Military Coup-detat. Soon followed by a change of government in Germany to Fascism. Now I, as well as the world, get worried.

1954 - The Crisis Begins
In 1954, after the announcing of an economic plan and military 'protection' plan with the new fascist-government in Russia, Germany proposed an alliance with Russia.
And, as you'd expect, Russia accepted. The World Crisis began.

CONTINUED IN THE NEXT PART.

Part Ten: The World At Crisis Point, Part Two

By 1955, official policy of the US was not to rule out the question of a war with both Russia and Germany. The world stood still - military actions were halted for the time being - diplomacy came to a standstill. This time however, gave me time to focus on domestic issues.

In 1956, French diplomats began talks with Germany -- trying to get them to sign an alliance against Russia -- but failed. This action led France to send troops to the Fencolands:

The Fencolands.

The Fencolands act as an important buffer zone between France and Germany, and, prior to the crisis, was not heavily militarily patrolled. Due to the mounting tensions between France and Germany, France subsequently rolled in troops in 1956.

This act worried the German-Russian empires. They weren't sure if this meant the possible invasion of Germany or whether this was a warning.

In 1957, the US and the UK began to station troops in nearby ACE (Allied Controlled Egypt). This further worried the German/Russian governments.

In 1958 the German/Russian government heightened the crisis by threatening India. They threatened to declare war if Indian installations in Egypt were not taken out by 1959.

This raised the bar to a new level.
