B***ard Chinese!

I am playing as the russians and I have a colony of silk that is one square outside of a city that will culturally expand in roughly 5 turns.

So anayway, I have been trading these silks to the chinese for ages ( and totally milkin' the deal since they really like my silk :goodjob: ). So what did they go and do??

Build a city right beside my damned colony and stolen mah friggin' silks!

I can't affort to go to war with them just yet as I have just made peace with the English after a long, offensive war that has sapped my military. I can only pray that my awe inspiring culture sways the city!

Anyone else had this happen?

Damn, just saw the time of my post!

I should really get some sleep... but .. can't ...resist .. Civ.....3......araghrGARhghrga!

They should have put a notice on the box!

WARNING: Loss of sleep due to game may produce halucinations and urge to post insane ramblings on random forums.

Way to go Mao! ;) I play Chinese and I do that to the AI all the time if I see a colony. I'll go drop a settler next to it, or break the roads to it, just to deny them the resource or luxury.

I'm all about harassing the other civs in such little non-combat ways.

Indeed, I always thought that this would start a war!

Now the AI has just shot itself in the foot, becuase now I know of this sneaky bast tactic!

Death to their resources! DEATH ! :flamedevi

Yeah, Mao did that to me to. I had a nice little dyes colony going, making insane gold off of it when he goes plopping some useless destined-to-be-size-1-forever desert city right next to it.

He was, em, uh, "dealt with" :tank::tank: accordingly. ;)

Well needless to say, I'm building an army as we speak.

And since myself and the Chinese are the two biggest nations, this could turn into a war for the planet! Domination or Bust!

:tank::tank:

This kind of settlement politics once iniitiated one of the longest wars I've had. The EVIL Germans simply took away my colony which was my ONLY coal resource. So there was no other option then war with a more powerful enemy...
Very ugly...

personally I never use colonies I always waste settlers so I will always have that resource that Im going for  Im not sure if this is stupid or extremly smart  only time will tell I guess :p

Right, the best use of the colony, for me, is where I really cant build a productive city. Given the AI's insane settlement drive, I watch for them. One thing is to put a couple of units in places where he would have to park his city in order to absorb the colony. Of course, If this is in enemy territory..:(
Another thing. I think they must know where the resources are going to show up.
I watched the Zulu plop a city in the middle of my jungle. Well, I had only enclosed three sides. They landed, walked past several perfectly good coastal and farming sites, and set up in the middle of the jungle. Not even on their continent. Sure enoug, rubber spawned there. Fortunately, the city like my culture better, anyway...:D And it was not the only rubber.

Now, China has done that same thing to me. put 2 cities right in the middle of my jungle. Eventually, my bounderies grew to block all access... Do you think I allow Rite of Passage?:D Every turn, without fail, send their units back. they cleared the jungle, THanks Mao (cities are mine now... saved me a ton of work) ad then tried to send the workers off somewhere else. Tried to reinforce the cities with defenders..... He took my central land. I am not going to accomodate him. Rubber is not showing yet. Want to bet there is some there?

Well it is smart, but only as long as the resource is not inside enemy territory. And that's how it was in the case I was talking about. But at that time I didn't know they could take it away without any fight.

The land-grabbing AI is a MAJOR problem in this game.

They can build a city near your colony - and it and any garrison on it will disappear; the resource going to your rival.

You can have a resource within a city's borders, but if the damn AI builds a city next to it they steal your resource without a fight. If you had troops on that resource YOU get denounced as a "warmonger" and blamed for any war!! That despite it was the AI that clearly made the aggressive move.

The AI also builds cities on deserts surrounded by deserts thus often cutting off your road access or grabbing colonies. You have to build cities WHERE NO SANE PERSON WOULD BUILD THEM just to block the stupid AI!

Patch it, Sid. I didn't wait all these years for Civ III for this kind of nonsense.

In that case, it's a total succes :D You want the AI to conform to your every whim? Want them to be the nice little pet from C2 and forget how to expand? Nonesense. Anywhere the AI can get a leg-up they should go ahead, in this case, it's territory grabbing. Handle it

Yup.
Use your brain instead of whinning.

Whatever the AI do, it can be used against it as well. Personally, I build a city OVER the resource and then a temple/library. Some troops are a nice addition. Outpost city, you know.

And human players CAN see where the resources are. 1st thing to know is what is possible where. Oil doesn't appear on grasslands.
Then, right click a tile and close using the enter key, to speed things up. Wherever a resource is hidden, the tile has some bonus for no apparent reason. You can tell by the numbers which resource is that. Of course you don't need to survey the terrain if it's already inside your borders.
It worked well before the patch, but I don't know if they removed it.

Zebomba, i can't believe you made this post after castigating another poster simply for asking if there were any cheats available. Just because the AI can do it too doesn't make it a non-cheat. By the way, i have no problems with people cheating, just hypocrisy.....

Exactly.

Apparently to some obtuse people anything - and I mean ANYTHING - the AI does is OK with them. Galleys sailing on oceans is another AI cheat I've seen.

It doesn't matter to some how ILLOGICAL, UNREALISTIC, NON-HISTORICAL, or JUST PLAIN GOOFY an AI action is.

Building cities in deserts is NOT DONE by rational people.

Building cities next to colonies or cities and stealing precious resources is unacceptable. Blaming the victim of this aggressive land-grabbing for any subsequent war is equally absurd.

Some people need to keep playing Fantasy games, and forget reason and logic.

Some of us like games and AI's to MAKE SENSE.

I use the nightmare strategy. I imagine the worst thing the AI could do to me, then I do it to the AI first. In other words, it's a legitimate strategy; and you can do it too.

I always try to build towns in every possible location of my "native lands." So I rarely have problems with the AI settling in my lands. Here is an example:

Re: Land-grabbing.

I guess a few of you would think it "logical" and "sensible" if, say, Canada in 2002 built a city right on the border of Alaska - and then claimed a big hunk of America's oil reserves there?

Then, if the U.S. threatened military action to get the oil back the world would denounce the U.S. as "warmongers".

That's what the dopey game AI is allowed to do.

Maybe Basutoland or Swaziland could in 2002 build a city right on the South African border - and claim a nice hunk of SA's gold mines?? Why not? If SA tried to take it back everyone would blame them!!

I think not. Why? IT MAKES NO SENSE.

Neither does the AI.

The "Land grabbing without a fight" is really a major problem, if we apply this to the real world, the mexican will just build a city near the border of L.A. then mexican land will grow and a portion of L.A. (at most 1/3) will be theirs.

Back to not so reality, I think the best way to grab that resource taken from your city is to improve your culture, and hope someday that foreign city will defect.

In a colony, if you really don't want that colony to be taken (right away) place a 8 good defenders around that colony (waste eh?).

Better yet, capture the city and once it is yours, sign again a peace agreement.

This position is very crowded, 16 civs on a standard map. I'm playing the Egyptians in Yellow. The capitals are golden globes.

My third town (marked red) encroaches culturally on the Japanese capital. It robs the Japanese of resources, as well as attacking them culturally. Of course, you have to defend this position by pop-rushing cultural improvements in the third town.

(I wanted to place the town just to the east of its current position, pressing the Japanese even more; but if I couldn't break out of the position, I wanted to make sure I would have access to the coast.)
