Thinking of learning a new language

I think that you should learn some obscure language to have possible back-up job as translater? You are writer, wouldnt it be ideal?

Many small countries offer rich culture.

I already mentioned that one of the reasons i want to learn a third language is to try to find an arcadia somewhere, if it exists. So in that sense it wouldnt help me to learn some language that belongs to a country which i don't want to ever visit.
But i feel that France would turn out to be the same as England, just another country with positives and negatives, and culture according to the lowest common denominator. I wish i am wrong though ;)
As for a job as a translator: i can always translate english literature, what gets one a job as that is mostly literary skill, and there arent many books translated in obscure languages; in fact many books here are translated from the english, even if english was also a translation of the original.

I gather you dont speak either ;)

German is out of the question, i did study it for a year, in elementary school. It is ugly, sounds like a peasant language imo.

Edit: Besides, why learn german when i can learn french, the language of a more refined culture?

rofl, peasant language

What does that even mean? It sounds like it is for the underclasses?

that's right Godwynn, a very good example is Beethoven's 9th... certainly peasant friendly ...

Spoiler :
OMG... :wallbash:

At least you typed this message in a refined language and not your native peasant tongue.

Back into the fields with you!

Hey, who said english was refined? ;)

Anyway, why care so much about the opinnion another has? Obviously there are things forming it, and it won't change with your ill-placed frustration.

Anyone else have a language suggestion?

rofl, so in other words you made a ridiculous statement with no way of backing it up and then revert to "IT'S NOT IMPORTANT TO YOU" in order not to retract it.

I wonder, why would someone post an opinion if they think other people shouldn't care about it?

You can have your "refined" French language. But remember, power is more important in this world than culture, and Germanic languages are the languages of power.

Why is it ridiculous? I do find german to be a very ugly language, and i learned it for a year. For all i know you dont speak one word of it ;)

As for it being a peasant language, well Germany has been a peasant nation for most of history, so no surprise there either. I could have just as easily said that it is the language of barbarians, noting that they destroyed europe twice with their warmongering.

But this is not a thread for germanophilia or anything of the sort. I already stated i won't be learning german, so move on ;)

If this is your view of "germanophilia" I would hate to see what anti-Germanism is to you.

I'm surprised Greek is even still a language, being dominated by the Romans and the Ottomans for so long. In my opinion, Greek is an outdated language for an outdated people. They pride themselves on what happened over 2,000 years ago.

Who is Greece begging to for a bailout again?

You don't even know a word of greek, and voice a view of it. I'll leave it at that, you are simply ignorant.

Now stop trolling in my thread, reported ;)

Woah, you are calling me ignorant and German a peasant language and I am the one trolling?

It is nice to know that you couldn't back up your claims or respond to my argument that Greek is based on what happened over two thousand years ago.

A little imagination would help. I am not in the mood of explaining anything to you. And you are, indeed, ignorant, for although there exist tens of thousants of greek words in english, which without them would be in dire need of terms in all epistemic fields, you cannot even piece together a simple sentence in greek.

And you are a troll too, since i specifically told you politely twice that this is not the thread for such a discussion, but you persist.

Maybe you will hear the words of Charles V though: "I speak Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men, and German to my horse" ;)

I think you should learn a near extinct language that very very few people can read in or speak anymore. Then, you should do all your writing in that language so that as few people as possible will ever be exposed to your pathetic, unlearned, derivative, cliche-ridden, pseudo-intellectual, and mind-numbingly bad writing as possible. :)
