I've never in my life had a game that I've installed that had so many problems. I've got a brand new install of windows SP2 on a 2.6 GHZ athlon 64 with a gig of ram. I've got a 6600 GT with the newest drivers. The HD is a raptor and the board is a DFI Lanparty. This computer is tits and has no problem running anything... well anything programmed correctly. What kind of quality control allows a game out that is full of bugs?

Check XML ... crash to desktop... repeat over and over.

I've tried about 10 different fixes and none have worked so far. The point is though, that the game shouldnt be released when someone running a Nvidia (or ATI) graphics card on a P4 or an A64 cannot run it bug free.

What the hell were the Beta testers running?

Feel free to file this game in the round circular bin.

I agree. But first, all the folks that designed and tested the game should be released into the atmosphere. Then toss the game in the friggin trash can and then throw the friggin trash can across the street.

Im starting to see this from your point of view. I was one of the Ya this game rocks people at the beggining. Now the game slowed down so much it was not playable so I reinstalled runs nice and fast again but now it freezes up every like 10 turns and makes this horrible screaching noise.
I really hope this patch fixes things cause this is not right. this is beyond what is acceptable bugs and issuses with new games.

If this doesnt get fixed with the patch I may just go out and buy the civ3 complete or whatever the newest one is with all the expansions. Im not knocking the actuall game it self it's a good game dont get me wrong but If I cant play I cant play it.

Fix for this issue is here:

It has to do with the sound card...the next thing the game sets up after "Check XML"

alright.. but I have USB speakers... and thats it. I dont use a sound card and everything on board is disabled. If I unplug my usb speakers, I still have the problem. Is it possible to run the game without any audio? There are no updated drivers to download.. it just uses windows defaults.

Rob

PS: I'm sure its a fine game.. its just REALLY annoying to spend 60 dollars on a game that doesnt work at all.

Yes I was going to wait for the patch but reading the walkthroughs I was drawn back to playing again (interesting changes), but once again I was frustrated by slow downs at this stage my settings are low this on a 256 MB 6800Pc Express, 1024 Memory and a AMD 64 3500 2.2GHz.This is a new computer bought specifically to cope with games like the up coming Oblivion, no problem running Fear on reasonably high settings Its not an uber machine but plenty of scope to upgrade in the future I cant believe it was stumped by Civ 4.

Since I’m pissed off with the graphics anyhow (personal preference) to see them moving in slow motion does not help. I just don’t understand what’s going on reading the forum some people seem to be quite happily playing away on lesser specs leaving aside the fact that I could have done something completely stupid (which would put me in fine company with a lot of others), I have quite clearly the recommended system requirements to play the game (I assume this means not having my computer trying to suck up extra memory from the carpet) yet I can not. I suspect we will be waiting along time for a patch to sort this out.

Once again apologies to people for being so negative but you must imagine that this is very annoying I would love to be asking questions about game play and getting positive advice etc but I cant even get off the starting block.

Doesn't the game requirements list a DX9c compatible sound card? How do you get sound without a sound card? :) Do those speakers have a sound card built in?

BTW most of the issues with the game are system specific, I have almost no issues with the game myself (just wish I could save building production ques). I've seen mayn many games come out with more bugs than this and even non-system specific bugs (I.E. happens to everyone).

I'm sure they are doing their best to resolve the issues, 2K is a good company unlike some that practically drop support after release.

I was really annoyed when I spent $50 on Dungeon Lords but it is well...It is never going to be a finished game... Hopefully a future patch fixes any issues you are having.

Just keep in mind that NO game maker can test their product on every single model of Video card / sound card / drivers combinations before release. Nothing would ever get released.

Every game says they require a Direct X compatible sound card and every game I've ever bought in the past 5 years or so has worked just fine. I do admit though, its not a "card". Its direct sound fed through the USB ports... digital. I'm gonna try a sound card and see if that makes any difference. I'm still not happy about it, but I guess my opinion doesnt matter much to the makers of the game since they already have my money.:mischief:

Wait for the patch instead, find another game. I know this is not what you want to hear, but unless you want to spend 5 hours + try to find a temporary fix. It will be fixed in a future patch, if not the first, the second.

So how you like being the beta tester?

I had the exact same problem. I also have a USB sound setup. My motherboard has audio but it was disabled. In order to get the game to load past the XML init screen I enabled my audio on the motherboard (changed it in the BIOS) and then installed drivers for my motherboard audio. The game loads for me now and it still uses my USB speakers for sound. Go figure. WHen I load the game it says the motherboard audio is being used for a voice recording device and the USB speakers the sound. Looks like this games needs to detect a sound card or it won't get past this screen. Good luck....

and I friggin dont want any sound coz i cant hear (deaf) which makes the sound completely obsolete for me.

Diable the sound in the ini file then.

I'm running the game on a HP Pavilion ZV 6005us notebook with an Athlon 64 3200+ processor, 512MB RAM and a ATI Radeon Xpress 200 with 128MB of dedicated RAM. No problems so, far, except that the game runs a little slowly when playing on huge maps, but it isn't bad. I think your issue has something to do more with the OS, rather than with the game itself. Call tech support, you paid for the game, you deserve to play it with no issues.

Hey, I had the same problem. I did an update to my BIOS drivers and then I went into the sound device (start/control panel/sounds speach and aud. dev/sounds & dev/voice tab) and I changed both to my sound card. It worked! I could play. I did the same thing to my other pc, but changed it to my onboard sound and it worked. Give it a try and good luck.

Now, my problem is not really lag. It's crashing to desktop. Can't figure it out.

It still doesn't work after weeks ... and the 'fixes' I see posted are surprising. This game should not require anyone with a reasonable system to do any upgrades. That's a signature of pitiful design. And its amazing for tech support to tell me to disable all other apps and try to run it from a second drive... do I really need a dedicated top-end system for this game?? If we are not going to get a decent game this year, maybe its time for all of us to receive RMA's and get our money back.
