This is by far the most fun I've ever had playing Civ

I tried to put up a glowingly positive post a while back, but the board ate it  But now I've been playing more, its even more true. I'm absolutely adoring this Civ so far, I think that the framework its laid down to be built upon over the years is absolutely incredible.

I've played games like Red Alert over the years and while I've liked them and been fairly good at them, its never been *fun* that there's just one optimal path, one build order that you have to play to be successful. Civ 4, once I got fairly good at it, had a lot of that feeling, with things like religion, if you didn't get it all right and set up perfectly out of the classical era, it was barely worth playing on. So far I've been compelled to finish every single game I started, that kind of linear efficient feeling is gone. I understand that might be a negative for really hardcore players, but there's still plenty to micromanage if you want! The level of depth is there in terms of things like preventing city growth that I just overlooked the first few times, bigger is not always better so specialising to ensure that your city is 'finished' at pop 11 or so is possible now instead of like in previous games you just got it to pop 20 and then had specialists.

1UPT and tactical combat, with rivers and hills and things, just makes warring an absolute joy. There are a few issues with things like the AI (lol, just a bit) and how badly things snowball when you beat the first line - maybe taking cities should be harder? - but actually warring and moving the units around on your front, outflanking people isntead of stack marching is amazing fun.

I just wanted to add some positivity to the board! Things do seem to be getting better, but for me this is by a long distance the best experience Civ has ever delivered, even with massive scope and room for expansion and polish.

I agree. Great to hear others are having a good time too. I as well am loving this Civ so far. It has its flaws, it has its brilliance. Let the patches remove the former, let the expansion packs increase the latter!

I wish I could love the game too, I love a lot of it's features. It just isn't a challenge right now, even on deity, so there's no reason to really try to maximize anything or really care about making a poor choice. You can just sorta mindlessly pound your way towards any victory.

Once the AI is up to par though I agree, this will probably be one of my favorite games of all time.

I agree! been playing civ more or less since civ2, civ3 was my favourit but i think this is amazing. Finaly getting rid of stacks, a dream come true.

I hated stacks. Love how they got rid of them. And the new way culture expands ... and HEXES! OMG, this game is amazing!

Agree.

I could never go back to Civ IV now, even though I love that game.

Civ V well patched = Civ IV was Yeeeesterday

Totally agree, once patched I think I'll love it as much as Civ 2.

And that says something.

It's warming up to me. I'll probably never fire up Civ 4 again. Though I still got issues with the UI and gameplay that annoy the hell out of me.

And once this game gets more mods, and the toolkit (to make decent maps) it will be kick as*.

It really is a good game, and will be a bloomin' great game after a few patches :D

Personally i feel like Civ V is a lot more linear than Civ IV . Why? Because domination victory is not only much more efficient but the AI's also passively force you to go for it. Constantly being asked to go to war and being war decced forces you to have a standing army and tbh, it would be stupid not to use it . Add to that for some reason there are always a couple or one AI civ who ends up eating all the civs nearby him not going to conquest yourself = suicide. In my Emperor game i'm facing an AI with an army 10x as big as mine , 10% more score and technologically equal , why? Because he ate his entire continent while i limited myself to colonizing half of mine (stupid unhappiness which seems to have no affect on the AI ><) . Now imagine if i wouldn't be going for a domination victory and tried to do it peacefully? His score would most likely being 2x as high and he would most likely out-tech me as well.

So yes the extremely aggressive AI makes the game extremely linear. Either fight and be a warmonger or be eaten. Off course i could play on lower difficulties which could maybe allow me to win peaceful victories but i don't like that concept of purposely lowering the difficulty to something far below what you can handle just to be able to play it differently .

Thank you for posting! Everyone esle is so negative about it. The only problems are a few bugs ,which will be patched, and i would like religion to be back but i really like the new combat, the Hexes and all the other changes.

To answer the unhappiness not effecting the AI. So not true, that huge continent you are facing down will be a push over. Hes at a combat negative and a production negative, so his units fight like crap and he can't replace them unless he quick buys them. (which the ai should be floating in money at that point, but I dont think they quickbuy units at all)

I am enjoying the game, finishing up my 9th win on Prince tonight after work. Then gonna move up a difficulty to King. Though I have only won as Domination once. I am undecided if I will win as Dom or Diplo as Alexander, I have almost taken over my continent for fun, but There are still 4 other civs out there. With a pointy stick rating over 2,000 and the next nearest one being like 500 I don't think the war would be very entertaining. Rifles and atrillery vs xbows has already been a joke.

Ah finally! A thread that doesn't bash the game!

Really It's a fantastic game in every regard, the graphics are
amazing, infact my computer can barely handle them!

What other people don't get is that this is Civilization FIVE not FOUR.

Let me explain.

In the last game, you could go on the unplanned war path and build units
like you have no population to care about and that resources will never
run dry. And who here remembers the Road to War Russian Stacks of doom?

Now I would like it if, for instance; I could stack about 5 units in one.
(example, 2 swordsman, 2 horsemen, and a catapult.)

But beyond that it makes units rather difficult to manage.
