After 500 grueling, but rewarding hours of reiterating my strategies to refinement and perfection; I think I will finally beat deity. Liberty all day, every day baby(#1 GPT by turn 67 with skillfully timed golden era from liberty).

And that is the sound of me beating deity as my libraries come online. Well played, civfanatics, well played. Trying to trick me into going tradition!

TL;DR portion, for you avid readers: I still don't know how you guys manage to beat deity with 3 settlements using tradition(anymore than 3 and you may as well go liberty, spend too long producing settlers.. that deity AI doesn't joke around). If I don't have the proper tiles come online with civil service, I find it impossible to catch the other civs on population, let alone utilize any specialist. And let's not beat around the bush here, if you don't claim your territory fast(before turn 100~), the AI will. That's my 2 cents on the whole "tradition OP" debate. Let us get some original, productive, and maybe creative thinking going on here ;)

Not sure you've necessarily won yet. Shaka's right to the east, and you have no army. Hiawatha to the west isn't exactly the most friendly of people when it comes to giving other people land. It's not unlikely that one or both of them could pop a DoW.

In addition, your cities appear to have no food, and are small to begin with. You've done well, but I wouldn't call the game over quite yet.

Tradition just makes it so much easier to A stay happy and B to grow, compared to liberty. Your number one priority should be pumping up food in your cities and streaking upwards in tech because of it.

Also, it's absolutely not a must to have 4 cities to win deity. I've only pulled it off a few times, but I won with the Incas with 3 cities, and with Venice with 3 as well. As long as you're well fed, down a city doesn't matter way too much.

Well, you're Poland, so that gives you a nice advantage and was the trick that worked for me. In fact, you can play standard with a UA of full liberty for free (and still have policies left to spare), and be fine. You need to be careful about Shaka though, and make sure you don't die from an early army. Make sure you get construction, because you can't fight off a deity army without it.

Good luck with beating deity! Your income is awesome for 1320 BC! Your growth needs to improve though.

I second on the growth, remember science is population based. The libraries aren't going to do much with 3 people. Build the second trade route and use it for internal food, and build granaries if you haven't already. You have tons of fresh water from rivers/lakes, so that should help once you have civil service.

It is all a part of my meta game strategy. I must work my gold tiles during the golden age, and then I will boom for growth(provided I can bring circuses online and maintain happiness). The goal right now is to churn out the biggest and baddest army with the insane economy and then do what ever I please to (probably the civilization closest to me with the wonders I can utilize the most effectively/best land/best food/etc.) If I recall correctly, Shaka has a "friendship" with me (ahaha who believes shaka anymore?), but maybe when the denouncing of Shaka begins, I will wipe him out and gain better diplomacy in one fell swoop.

I was also thinking about fast producing my national college with a GE, or who knows. Infinite possibilities with my great person choice. Rushing the NC sounds like a good idea though.

Even though he's a warmongering jerk, Shaka is actually really loyal! If it's an actual declaration of friendship you may be able to build off of this as long as there are other civs to attack. Be careful backstabbing him.

I would probably choose a great scientist with the great person. That will delay the national college a little bit, but will make it that much stronger when it comes. An academy this early is quite powerful, as it is a huge strength of Babylon and the Mayans.

This strategy of selective tiles during golden ages (and getting the most out of the liberty golden age) is a really interesting one though. It certainly produces a nice income, and 520 (well, an additional few hundred) gold during this golden age may be worth the temporary decrease in population. It at least gets you a building or a couple composite bowmen.

I'm interested to hear how this goes.

Nice gold income. You've also forward settled on Russia twice. I would be real careful. Your defense is weak and Russia is known for their sneaky backstab

Interesting you should say that Redaxe.. Russia DoF with me, but I will be careful. I was kind of upset she wanted a friendship because that was the territory I really wanted(She is third on score, and who knows, she may get petra with all those desert tiles, and then I will probably take her no matter what). At the same time I want to avoid war with her because of Shaka and Iroquois. Best case scenario one of them invites me to war with another. I am pretty sure Shaka is at war with washington right now? I don't know, i'll stop rambling and post an update when I get time to continue.. Damn school work and it having priorities!

Looks like a nice early attempt at deity. A few things I'd like to mention:

    Good notes:
    - Superb gpt. Use that to bribe civs to DoW each other, then they'll weaken each other and you can rise up. Russia v Zulus is one suggestion. The gpt should also help you upgrade troops.
    - Good acquisition of luxury resources. That must explain your superb gpt early in game. It will also help bribe civs to DoW each other too.
    - Nice early expansion, considering that deity is notorious for AI sudden expansion. I only know this from others here, but I will try deity once I master emperor a little more and then immortal.
    - Besides capital, you're using the hills to boost city base production. Nicely done.
    - Culture per turn looks pretty good too.

    Things to consider:
    - As previously stated, your cities are small and are not growing. This will hurt you in the long run, unless you build some farms on grasslands and next to rivers. Once you get more trade route spaces, use them to feed the capital or any intended city you wish to boost.
    - I don't know what the game speed is, but your bpt needs more work. Yes, you're cranking up libraries but they won't have much effect yet. Grab NC ASAP.
    - Prepare yourself militarily in the medieval era, due to Shaka. Keep him busy. If he is universally hated, consider teaming up with Catherine to defeat him. Keep a reserve force if Catherine betrays you or if Hiawartha attacks. You shouldn't really receive a warmonger penalty if you conquer hated civs, unless I am mistaken.
    - You don't really have much room to expand anymore. You could settle a city next to the marble up north, but that won't be really worth it. You could expand westwards a bit. I haven't had much experience with the Iroquois but if there are players saying that they hate expansionists near their area, then I wouldn't consider it.
    - No religion? Now seems to be a good time to crank up some shrines maybe. For me, Russia tends to be a pious civ, so they might instantly pop a religion once they finish piety. I'd also be a bit concerned if they get heathen conversion, because AI does know how to use that ability, or maybe coincidentally, they do as they send unguarded missionaries all other the place. Oh, I see Mt Sinai. No need to build shrines, just purchase that NW. Should cost about 300-400 gold tops. It's within range of Lodz. Do it before someone else claims it.
    - Start working on roads ASAP. You should be able to afford it. The roads will be especially important if Shaka attacks you.

Well actually thinking about this again its probably a smart move forward settling Russia. There's no reward for coming last on claiming land and with the neighbours you have, I would say war is almost 100% inevitable especially on Diety. So you may as well expand and deny the AI room to spread, that will work in your favor long term.
The other thing to consider is you don't have much happiness and your cities are still small. I would take the advice from Sendos and use mt Sinai to get a religion that can boost your happiness. If other AI start acting more hostile you could also throw 2 social policy points in Tradition to get Oligarchy.

I'd like to see updates on this!

It does look like a good start, but I agree that you're going to struggle due to growth.

I think Shaka will destroy your empire, so this hinges heavily on how effective you are at keeping him from warring you or hindering his progression.

Ah, nice maximizing the golden age income is a good idea.

I'd second using some of the money to bribe Shaka to attack Moscow. Russia will be gunning for you damn quick.

I dunno about the liberty GE on the NC. If you're planning on expanding to more cities soon, then yes. If you're holding at 4 for the moment, it seems unnecessary - you can afford the turns to build it while your cities grow. The 50% boost isn't boosting much at the moment - I'd say you'd be better off getting a GS and building an academy, or maybe trying for Notre Dame with the GE if you want to get a lot bigger (though getting it is a stretch on deity even with the GE).

Hmmm well Shaka does have the 2nd lowest score which is a long way behind some of the others. Definitely keep updating please, I'd like to hear how you fare against Shaka

Shaka's score isn't too important, an enormous military doesn't give you any points.

I wouldn't try to take Shaka though, by the time you get any army together he'll have Impis, and likely ready to assault you as well. Plus, I wouldn't put it against Cathy and Hiawatha to close in on your cities as soon as your main force moves into Ulundi.

Just shuttle food caravans around your cities, they're much to small right now, and hold up an army big enough to keep Shaka at bay

I find it nearly inconceivable that Cathy hadn't expanded toward you... Russia, especially on deity expands a ton. *mind blown*

Also, better bribe shaka ASAP or incoming a buttload of impis in like 5 turns, good bye to your empire.

You definitely have a good start, but I wouldn't nearly call the game over yet. As others have mentioned, avoiding getting wiped out by Shaka is pretty tough, especially with no army. He may be your friend now, but if he gets Impis and you still have no army, you're gonna be first on his hit list.

Grow those cities fast, because you're never gonna catch up in tech with small cities. And I don't care how much gold you have, when Cathy turns on you and DoW's you with Bombers and you haven't researched Flight, you're dead.

That said, good luck. :D Keep us updated.

Remember how I said Shaka is a loyal warmongering jerk? Well, Cathy is a super backstabbing warmongering jerk when she runs out of room to place settlements! That declaration of friendship means nothing to her! You definitely want an army, and I might even consider getting the investment in to Oligarchy for better city defense, or get a +defense pantheon when you start working mount Sinai (this is one of the few times I think picking one of these pantheons is perfectly valid). Deity armies are more manageable the later a game goes on, but you need to be prepared if you're settling next to Russia and The Zulu!

I imagine Russia is the most likely DoW. You've captured tiles in the third tier of Moscow. ;)
