I am wondering if it is standard practice to turn this off.

Its always a bummer for me when I am in the middle of a hotly contested globe and I see the turns start to count down. So I usually have the box unchecked.

I never have Time Victory or Space Race turned on. I find that time victory adds a rush to the game, and although I never usually play to the 1900s-onward (Other than ICBMs, the modern era is boring for me), it feels better to not be constrained. I have space race off because I don't like it.

I've never turned time victory off because I've never actually been in danger of having not won (or lost) the game before turn 2050 rolls around.

I'm sometimes tempted to turn cultural or space victory off when I know from the start I feel like a good old fashion domination romp, but I never do because those are pretty much the only two victories the AI will stumble into winning.

I've only had one game go beyond 2000AD - AFAIK that's only 80% of the available turns - and that was an OCC on Archipelago. Even when I did an OCC on Huge (larger maps have greater tech costs) I was easily on track for a space win before 2050, even without any significant tech trading. (Ended up instead with a Barb-aided Conquest win thanks to some fun custom settings... :D)

I can't imagine what kind of settings could lead to the timer running out before the game is decided.

I turn it off as well. I've never liked the idea.
