Now into Modern Warfare and havent found much regarding naval warfare & support....I have Battleships, Destroyers & Subs and now entering battle with a pretty strong foe who has many coastal cites....

Would like tips on how a navy can support the ground forces...

What I am referring to is ways to bombard coastal cities rather than landing troops.....etc...etc...Use of the ships and or missles..

Any tips on how to use a navy effectively is most appreciated....

Subs (and destroyers in Conquests) are for spotting enemy subs. Then send in destroyers to kill them.

Battleships (and cruisers in Conquests) are for escorting your carriers and the transports carrying your invasion forces.

Naval bombardment of cities isn't very effective. The best option for bombardment is bombers flying from carriers. They should be used to bomb the roads and railroads connecting enemy resources and luxuries and generally destroying their transport network before you invade. They also work far better against cities than battleships do.

I like to use Battleships to isolate coastal cities (destroy all roads/railroads leading to the city) prior to land invasion. Also, if I know I will not be attacking a city for 5 or 10 turns then I will auto-bombard the city with Battleships.

As above, bombarding (with ships, artillery or bombers) is not immediately effective (usually a lot of failures). You should only use this method if you have the patience to allow it time to work.

If you send your ships out in fleets have the aircraft, and any transports, in the centre, escorted by battleships. Have a few destroyers around this core, with one or two subs between them and three subs at the front of your fleet. Those three subs will scout the sea ahead so that you know if you are about to run into something.

I like using fleets that way. On a huge map I might have 4 large fleets. But I don't know if other people would use them that way. Most people don't talk about naval tactics much.

I tend to bombard the cities that I am not attacking with the troops. Bombard resources and important rail/roads. It helps to cause more chaos for the enemy away from the battlefield. Destroying improvements on tiles can damage the enemy a lot.
