I just love that movie. I just love Sidney Poitier. I just love the fact that he's the first black man to win a Best Actor Oscar. And I just that he received a Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama in the above photo.

What is the presidential medal of freedom award specifically for? I've seen him once or twice and he struck me as a great actor, very handsome guy too

he Presidential Medal of Freedom is a decoration bestowed by the President of the United States and is, along with the equivalent Congressional Gold Medal bestowed by an act of U.S. Congress, the highest civilian award in the U.S. It is designed to recognize individuals who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors." The award is not limited to U.S. citizens and, while it is a civilian award, it can also be awarded to military personnel and worn on the uniform.

In other words, "you're famous to Americans for something".

Cheney has won it. Rumsfeld, too. In fact most of the members of the Gulf War/Iraq war leadership circles have one. Margaret Thatcher, Strom Thurmond, William F. Buckley Jr, and plenty of others.
