..and apparently for the last 30 years..
Spoiler :
A man listed as the oldest living male in Tokyo died some 30 years ago, city officials said after his body was found mummified in his bed.

Telegraph

Another cute story of people trying to rip off the state..

My grandmother found someone who was dead for six weeks and said the smell was quite bad.

I dont know how you could live in the same building with the body of someone you loved.

I assume he must have died in the winter and they left the heating off to reduce the flies.

Good to see you back VRWCAgent

Reminds me of the plot to a Rose for Emily... only because of the corpse thing, though. I certainly hope nobody killed him and kept his body around just so he couldn't leave them... creepy obsession is creepy.

Interesting reveal though. Things are not always what they seem. ;) One could argue that reality as a whole, not just warfare, is based on deception! /tinfoil hat

He evidently starved himself to death (some extremist Buddhist cult thing), and due to the manner in which he did that his body was effectively mummified. Apparantly the body doesn't smell and the granddaughter only found out because she saw a skeleton sitting on the bed by peeking through the bedroom door.

I don't get it - seeming as nobody could meet him anyway, then why did they need to keep the body around? A dead body isn't any more convincing than no body.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Well where are they gonna put the body? If they bury it or burn it there's a good chance that the police will notice. I could easily have 2 or 3 dead bodies in my attic without anyone ever finding out.

Particularly as burning bones produces a very distinctive yellow smoke. (Yes, I know extremely random things.)
