Totally AWESOME book to tide you over until release!

Shall we merge the World History and Civ5 sections then?

good idea! :) Most world history threads are what-if situations anyways, which is kinda what civ4 and 5 are.

if you want a book to tide you over, get the civ5 strategy guide, amazon.com is selling it for like $12, for sale on sept.10th.

For some reason the UK version won't be out till october 21'st or something -_-

But anyway, its a 200 page strategy guide, so yeah that should tide you over.

Guns Germs and Steel I found to be a very good book and I kept thinking of Civilization while reading it. I had to do an essay for High School. Its a good read if your into that kind of stuff

That one is great. Just like "Collapse" from the same author, Jared Diamond.

Currently I am reading "A History of the Modern World" by Robert Palmer.

Guns, Germs, and Steel is a must read for any history buff. Currently reading James McPherson's "Tried BY War" Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief , which is very good. and I am starting "Empire of the Summer Moon" by S.C. Gynne. That book is about Quanah Parker and the Comanches.

Robert Palmer's "History of tyhe Modern World" is a great overview and can be found in audio at most libraries.

A Splendid Exchange: How Trade Shaped the World by William J. Bernstein is really good. Talks about how trade influence history through time.

Every time I read a book on history, or watched some documentary on TV, I feel like playing Civilizations. So the first Civ I will play on Civ 5 that I didn't random will probably influence by whatever book or show I was reading/watching. :D

A lot of good suggestions here. I read both Guns, Germs, and Steel and Collapse. Of the two I liked Guns, Germs, and Steel and would recommend that one first.

If you liked those two you might also like A History of Warfare by John Keegan which tracks the evolution of strategies and techniques in warfare from ancient times to the present.

Also, if you like "What If" scenarios there are actually two books out there called "What If" and "What If 2" which have historians examine alternate outcomes. I liked the first one the best.

Happy reading.

I love alternate history. Harr Turtledove's TL191 series is a fun read and Im currently reading Brittania's Fist:From Civil War to World War and the sequel Rainbow of Blood.
Also bought Red Inferno 1945

Turtledove's about as bad an author of fiction as Jared Diamond is of history. :shake:

Most macrohistorical texts suck, anyway. And the ones that don't tend to be economics ones. Findlay and O'Rourke, Power and Plenty is good, try that.

I like some of Turtledove's fantasy. But then I hit puberty.

Obviously they need to translate it first ;)
