I built the ToZ in my first game and noticed that the ancient cavalry unit did not add to my unit cost. Now, I was in despotism. So my question is, do the additional units provided by the ToZ, enslaved enemy units (by Inca?), etc. add to unit cost / turn?

Free units from wonders will be like getting the free granaries from the Pyramids; they don't count towards maintainence. Thats the beauty.

My free crusaders from the Knight's Templar wonder require upkeep (upkeep I am happy to pay :) )

The REAL bonus of this is that - presumably - there will be some kind of flag in the game code or, ideally, the editor which will allow you to select some units to be maintainance-free ( civ2 fanatic style ). While this has a variety of useful applications if it is true ( e.g you could decide to make all UUs maintainance free to encourage their building in larger numbers ) it could be invaluable in scenario/conquest building.

I don't view that as a drawback as all. They are free; if you can't support them, just sell them for a few shields. If you have to do this, view the wonder as a few extra shields every 5 turns. :p
