Trade network issues.

Ok, totally confused. First of all my cities are connected and my resources are being shared as they should be but my question lies with the trade network list on the left side of the city screen and why each city isnlt listed in every other city (I'm assuming that since resources are being shared that that is seperate from the "trade network"). New York has my other three cities...Washington, Boston, and Philadelphia listed and is getting a + for each. Boston, which is listed for New York as I just said, doesn't have New York listed. How can that be? How can New York have a trade network with Boston but Boston not show one for New York? In fact none of the other 3 cities that are listed in New Yorks network has New york listed. In fact each of the other 3 cities only has 1 other city listed. How do I get trade networks set up in all my cities for all my other cities? The main reason for me being concerned about this is that I really need the + that you get for each city in your network. Some of my citizens are grumpy at the moment.

On another note, is there a certain tech that you need before you can upgrade your units? My tech tree has progressed to where I can build axmen and other more advanced units but I don't have the option to upgrade my Warriors yet

You are confusing trade networks with trade routes(which provide not ). There is a maximum number of trade routes that a certain city can have. It probably won't have a trade route with every city it's connected to. This does not mean that they are not connected. Cities can share resources and not have any trade routes with each other.

As for your second question:
Do you have the correct resources? Axemen require copper to build.
The units must be in your borders to upgrade them. Move them into your territory and it should let you.
A unit sometimes has multiple tech prerequisites. Macemen need Civil Service and Machinery.

You also need to have enough Gold to upgrade them. It's a costly venture sometimes and that early in the game it's quite possible you just can't afford it.
