Several times during the course of a game ill get a message saying the trade
route between city A and city B has been broken. But the road hasnt moved
or been destroyed at all. Whats this?

This is happening to me as well, though I'm at peace with everyone and have only one civ that is hostile.

Yeah, I hate this.

I had this happen twice to me in my most recent game, and figured out why both times:

A.) Another civ built a city on top of a road going between two somewhat distant cities of mine. Since I didn't have any units in the area of the city, I couldn't "see" it until I sent one down the road. I had to take the city to get the trade route back.

B.) Another civ pillaged an iron mine that belonged to a city-state than I was allied with, thus cutting them (and me) from its uses. I had to wait for the city-state to rebuild the mine, which took quite a while.

From what I've noticed, I get those 'broken trade route' quite often when I'm upgrading roads to railroads. It seems that when you are replacing roads with railroads, the road is removed and is only replaced when the railroad for that tile is complete. If the game checks for trade routes during that time you get the notification.

I started to think the roads to railroads change was the issue as well. The cities are always still connected to the capital when I look.

I've also noticed that sometimes the image will change from road to railroad, but at other times it just stays as a road even when all the squares between the two cities have been upgraded.

I have not noticed this at all...

what I have noticed: Open border treaties expiring, other players founding cities on my roads
