go into the city screen of one of your city. Look on the top left corner, just below the panel with the sliders and maintenance. YOu have trade routes.
The number of trade routes of a city is determined by tech advancement and civics/wonders (free market, currency, corporation all give more trade routes). At the beginning, no city have any.
The quantity of commerce given is determined by the size of the cities concerned by the route, and multipliers. Routes to other civs are more beneficials, as are routes to overseas cities.
THe best trade routes are automatically calculated by the computer, so you don't have to worry too much about this.
Finally, if you use BTS or the exotic foreign advisor, in the "info" screen, you can see the number of commerce gained by trade routes with each rival. To get trade routes with a civ, you need open borders and none of you should be under mercantilism.
