I'm not sure how difficult this would be to implement in a Civ game but Sid Meir has proven it is possible to do in the Colonization game. That is to have goods that are produced from natural resources. So we could have textiles made from wool or cotton. ANd the list could go on and on to include a real trading network that in modern times could include electronics, automobiles, etc.

That's similar to Civ2's trading system, but Civ3 could improve on that by (of course) using no caravans, and making the goods that you trade based on what resources are within the city radius - otherwise, all cities with roads connected to the resource would be able to produce the goods, but then again that also makes sense (as if the goods are transported around on the roads). I liked the supply and demand system that was in Civ2, and I think they should implement something similar in Civ3. IMO it would be incredibly useful if you could also trade food and shields between your cities, so a mountain-surrounded city could trade a certain number of shields (on a per-turn basis) to a grassland-surrounded or coastal city, which would trade a certain number of food (per turn), back to the mountain city, in return for the shields.

While a good idea I think it is too much ofa departure from what is in Civ3 now to make it economically feasible for Firaxis to do this. You might want to suggest this for Civ4 though. :)

I think it would add a whole new area to the game being able to trade goods made from raw materials. The trading network would appear much more real than it is in its current form. I think that caravans and freight should be brought back but once a trade route is set up maybe a line displaying the trade route would be on the map, it could be broken up by piracy and blockades or if the other side launches a trade embargo. I think trade is very limited in Civ3 cuz the AI simply will not buy your luxuries or resources cuz they're buying techs and communications. It would just add a new dimension making commerce a little more something you can control than just being lucky enough to acquire luxuries.
