This is something that always puzzled me but never actually asked.

So to anyone who might know...

When you trade resources with another civ, in the diplomacy screen it shows the benefit of the resource. For example marble is + 1 :hammers: and crab is + 1 :food: & 1:health: .

So lets say i trade 1 marble in exchange for 2 crab.

Do all my cities get + 2 :food: ?

If that is so then do I lose + 1 :hammers: in all cities for trading the marble?

Did I ever have +1 :hammers: in every city just for connecting the marble?

Nope, that's the bonus yield for the tile without building the improvement.

The +1 food or hammer listed next to the resource in the city panel is the bonus given to the tile the resource is on. It is NOT an empire wide bonus - only the health and happiness effects of a resource are empire wide.

People have repeatedly asked for these misleading hammer and food labels to be removed since Civ 4 v1.0, but have been ignored. There is absolutely no point in having the tile bonus listed there, and I must have had to correct this misunderstanding dozens of times.

like mr cynical said, but also, about the two crabs thing...

I think having a crab gives all your connected citys +1 health, +1 more for citys with a certain building (like lighthouse or harbour or whatever...i suck at ships in computer games)....

but having 2 or 3 or 10 crabs still only gives you +1 (+1), not +2 or +10 etc.
you can see this 'in' your cityscreen, topright(ish).

I may be wrong...

that's right, there is no point in trading for 2 of the same resource in terms of getting extra health or happiness bonus, because you won't get it. of course with corporations there is new value in having more than 1 of the same resource but that's another issue.

Thanks for this information, i recently discovered the benefits of trading. Theres so much of the game I haven't even begun to explore now.

However, you guys mentioned that the hammer/food bonus is based on the tile only. If you trade that resource, will the tile bonus be removed from that individual tile?

Also what happens if you receive that resource? will you get a hammer? or nothing at all

No, nothing can remove that tile bonus.

No. You get health, happiness, construction options and corporation boosts from traded resources, but no direct hammer or food boosts.

So wait, lemme see if I get this. If you trade a resource, you will only get a commerce boost (thats what I got from corporation boost) and maybe some happiness and health? Say you trade something like copper and cow. you won't any of the benefits from those resources? Even if your city is connected to the nation supplying you with said resources?

if an AI gives you a cow resource in a trade, the benefit that you get (if you previously had no cow) is +1 in health in every city, and +1 additional health in cities that have supermarket.

If an AI civ gives you copper in trade, your cities then are able to build units that require copper and build wonders twice as fast if the wonder says "double production speed with copper".

Sorry I still don't get it.
If i send a workboat to work crabs for example it is + 2 Food in that tile not + 1 that it shows in the trade screen. Same for all the resources it is more than it shows in the screen....so what is the + 1 food hammer or commerce that shows in the trade screen?

You'll notice that BEFORE you build a workboat the crabs have +1 food compared to normal coast tiles. Similarly for bananas. Marble has +1 production, etc. This is regardless of which if any improvement you build on the tile.

So you can still build a farm over Uranium, and it'd be a good farm indeed. Imagine...

Hi, I have a somewhat related question. In resource trding, if I have, say, 1 marble and I trade it away, do I lose the bonus I get on building some wonders? Do I need to make sure I keep at least 1 instance of a resource for myself?

Yes, you need 1 to get the bonus yourself
