I'm trying to figure out exactly how treasure units work. How does one specify the target location? Does the AIs know this? Will they try to intercept the treasures? Does the AI know if the treasure needs a ship to get to the target location?

Any findings would be appreciated.

Treasures (in Conquests) are flags, (like Princess), so that those conquests are in fact "Capture the Flag" scenarios. Unit has to capture it ("seize treasure") and bring to target location (a capital, or VPL if present).
AI knows this and does all the strategic stuff you mentioned, though in my opinion it's slow and clumsy (see Age of Discovery conquest).

You missed the point.
The flag unit is not the one supposed to move. It is a "carry me" unit, meaning another (usually military) has to come over it, then "capture" it (special action button) then move (ie to a ship here) still carrying it. When carrying a flag, a unit just has this difference, a " ' " at then end of its name.
Very clear, isn't it ?

Just browsing, and since it is already 4 a.m. over here in Germany, I'm too tired to check with the editor right now. But isn't there a "load" flag which has to be set for units to enable them to onboard on ships?

i have the load and flag unit boxes checked on for the treasure unit. I'm not sure what it means, but when i look at the AIs in debug mode, the treasure unit is in red letters. I have a couple of VP locations setup. Could this be confusing the treasure unit? I really dont care which one the treasure goes to. My goal is to create treasure that will be sent back to any available home port which all have VPs. This will create "convoys" for subs to go after. Its a shame that the treasure units cant be sea units. As is, the treasure needs to wait for infantry and transports to arrive to pick it up.
