I'm trying to host a game of internet civ2 using Multiplayer Gold Edition with the latest patches...but because I'm running off a switch with my dsl connection it gives my ip as the router assigned address, rather than the original ip assigned by the dsl provider...any help on how to get around this, or maybe I'm doing something wrong with the ip?..

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks..

Humn, the router is a NAT.

It has the IP address given by the ISP. Your PC has a LAN IP address. When the router passes data, it changes the IP address transparently.

Thus, you should specify your LAN IP address in the client software and the router will sort it out automatically. I never played Civ2 ... what are the options?

Hi I have the same problem as joshua I think

I am online with LAN and my civ2 isnt working over Internet
But I didnt understand what stormwind means by his explanation I am not very experienced in things like NAT ISP ...

Hope anyone can help me that game is still my favourite and playing over Internet would be great :)

On the LAN each machine has it's own IP address. On the internet, they all share one IP address.

You didn't say which version of Windows you have, but for WinXP...

Start Menu > My Network Places > 'View Network Connections' (link in left column).

Then select the connection you want to know more about, and press the new link titled 'View status of the connection'.

In the new window, swap to 'Support' (tab) and it will display the IP address.

To find your Internet IP address, do the same on the computer that connects directly to the Internet.

Hey cool you are online :)

I have Windows 98 and i didnt find network places in the start menue maybe there is no under win 98?
I ve found Network enviroment but when I klick on it it says that I am not linked with the network
thats bad right?
I just got the internet connection and I am a noob in it

Based on your last post, it sounds like you don't have a Local Area Network (LAN). Your connection to the Internet is a completely seperate network connection to a LAN.

The topic of networks is a very steep learning curve, and because of that, it's very easy to end up speaking on different wavelengths

Based on what you said before, these were my assumptions: You have two computers on a Local Area Network (LAN), and you are using Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Both computers are running Win98. ICS is working because you can browse the Internet with both computers.

I'm not trying to sound condescending: Please confirm your situation, without using terminology you aren't absolutely sure about :)

I have never owned Civ2, so I'm clueless as to what it needs for Internet play. I can only post about generic networking stuff. You should try the Civ2 forums for game-related problems.

I definately have LAN connection and only one computer
I installed my windows new and now I am able to see the other guys in the LAN but civ still dont work :(

But it isnt a game related problem I can play the game single player and also multiplayer over Internet but then only if I go to the university pc-pool
So I think its a multiplayer problem probably I need to have to do something with network settings maybe
I dont know why its not possible to play at home on my computer

Ok, I thought you were at home - not at university :p

Don't know what a PC Pool is. The network settings are outside your control at university. There may be a firewall, proxy server, or some other complication (it's bound to be a large network with strict security). You can learn a lot from checking your computer's network settings but a visit to technical support would probably be more fruitful and less time consuming.

Nice post count stormbind. :)
