Trump In Charge: Wrecking Ball

After reading both Time articles and another interview before the elections I agree with Trump the Wrecking Ball!
The comparison with Hitler is just empty for me! I was taught fascism, nazism, Hitler stuff in school and in plenty of documentaries, Trump is not Adolf!
...
but sure that's just like, my opinion, man!

I think the difference is Hitler believed in his BS, Trump doesn't believe in anything.

Reading trough the articles I have to agree that his opinion, his directive changes a lot with polls brought by his staff.
Although I am a pro-life myself but sensible enough to vote to decriminalize abortion in our referendum a decade or so ago, I think I agree with the middle ground his staff came up with for this problem, let each state decide for itself.
Looking from over the pound I do realize that the US is pretty much 50 countries mashed together and I can't believe that all those million people living there are homogeneous enough to feel the same about many different questions.
I think the Universal Healthcare should also be something easier to be decided state wide first, maybe there are already more "pro" leaning Universal Healthcare states. If one state makes a good example of how to implement Universal Healthcare maybe others will follow suit and, maybe, later on, there can be a true federal wide Universal Healthcare policy.

The historian Brett Devereaux did a good piece here on the parallels between Trump and Mussolini/Hitler. And before you take this as a leftist calling everything they dislike fascism (which is somewhat of a thing, though definitely exaggerated by many on the right), please actually give it a read, as it's not just name calling - he goes into some detail of how Trumps words and actions, and those of his close supporters (note, close supporters, not "anyone who voted for him") align with serious definitions of fascism.

...loved the Frieza reference
...
his bold remarks in between the, very appreciated history lesson, are already insinuating Trump and his cabinet are fascist without drawing parallels before, and I consider that intentional, bad faith, misleading
...
I think the current/former cabinet staff calling Trump a fascist are doing it out of spite without actual proof and just hearsay...I've been called a ist before many time here in this forum, let me assure you I am not, whether you choose to believe or not it's up to you (sure I am not the one leading a nation, but still!)...
...
Populist, yes of course Trump is a populist, we have many here, our current President, the former prime minister and opposition leaders in both side of the spectrum. Maybe a definition of populism would be more helpful than this essay. Is populism bad?
...
Yeah Trump is an A-hole no doubt about it...but I believe the key word he omitted is illegal, and to what I would add undocumented, mostly males adults of young age. We have that problem in here too, I welcome legal, documented migration with gender quotas of people that come looking to build a life for themselves through hard work, not hand outs. We have plenty of "natives" looking for hand outs we definitely don't need foreigners adding to that too. Our Universal Healthcare system is already in dire straits because of Medical tourism (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_tourism) I don't mean that we shouldn't help but this is a small poor EU country (Portugal...we had the Troika procedures here)
...
I'll give you that about the whole dictator for a day thing...but can he really enforce doing or going beyond that...I still think it's Trump being unfiltered as normal
...
China is wrecking EU businesses as well, I think policies are needed to deter that, sure Trump promises to put new tariffs against EU exports, but hey! He wants to do what he think it's best for his people not European citizens and that's normal!
...
I'll also give you that for the purge political opposition and control of the media, though I remember him promising to lock up Hillary and he never got around to it, so I have my doubts he's going through with that shtick this time around. I'd like to add that we have plenty attempts at media control here too in the form subsidies and other hand outs from the state to the private sector...I hate that!
...
I still don't believe he's a fascist, wrecking ball yes, fascist no! There seems to be whole exercise into painting a fascist target on his back to satisfy some wishful thinking than too warn common folks of some impending doom. It's more like there are some people hoping to say something like: "Here there's the fascist I've telling you about, see? I told you so? Didn't I tell you?" than the "Oh, no! Fascism! Fascist! We're doomed"...and we have plenty of vocal people like that too here...they need a big fascist target to feel legitimized in their "criticism" (more like defamation!)...I've been there (the one being defamed!)
...
The 14 points from the Eco guy are interesting...but they are hit or miss but the author kinda stretches it a bit like in all of the text before, he claims to be objective in his approach to this essay but I see a lot of cherry picking, not that he his entirely wrong though.
And again I can see both point in our left and our right parties, autocratic tendencies, belittling the enemy, dehumanizing the adversary I see it in both the left and the right. We have a Senegalese activist called Mamadu-Ba here heading a state founded anti-racism organization (very quiet when a group of hooded black men drenched a bus driver in molotov cocktails and sat him on fire to the point of helding a gun against him prohibiting from fleeing from being burned alive, this happened in November) that very vocally said in a rally a year or so back the "We must kill the white man"!
...
Still thanks for the share, great read, very biased, very quick/eager to paint the fascist target on Trump and Trump related stuff.

Orange moron speaks:

It’s so simple, you know. It isn’t like Elon with his rocket ships that land on the moon within 12 inches of where they want to land or he gets the engines back. That was the first, I really...I said “who the hell did that.” I saw engines about three, four years ago. These things were coming, cylinders, no wings, no nothing, and they’re coming down very slowly, landing on a raft in the middle of the ocean someplace with a circle. Boom! Reminded me of the Biden circles that he used to have, right? [Gesticulates with right hand in an oddly circular motion.] He’d have eight circles, and he couldn’t fill them up. And then I heard that he beat us in the popular vote. But that...I don’t know, I don’t know. Couldn’t fill up the eight circles [Again, gesticulates with right hand in an oddly circular motion.] Couldn’t fill up the eight circles. I always loved those circles. They were so beautiful to look at. In fact, the person who did that, that was the best thing about his...the level of that circle was great. But they couldn’t get people, so they used to have the press stand in those circles, because they couldn’t get the people. Then I heard we lost. Oh, we lost. But we’re never going to let that happen again. We’ve been abused by other countries but we’ve been abused by our own politicians, really, more than other countries.

I have more complaints on grocery. The word grocery. You know, it’s a sorta simple word, but it sorta means like everything you eat. The stomach is speaking. It always does. And, uh, I have more complaints about that. Bacon and things going up. Double. Triple. Quadruple.

Good luck America.

The circle speech:hammer2:
Trump should get him someone to roll his joints and make sure the weed is cleaned from harmful substances/additives!

@Sommerswerd wow that was fast, has anyone asked anyone who voted for Trump if they care about this?

@Sommerswerd wow that was fast, has anyone asked anyone who voted for Trump if they care about this?

I am from country with mentality and education similar to americans who voted guy with mouth-full of similar promises he cannot keep. They made such poll and the general sentiment was allegedly a normalization of 'well they are politicians, of course they say a lot of things they cannot fullfill during campaign, that's how it goes, but it's about bigger picture'. What that picture is, no one knows. I assume similar sentiments. As it appears to me, when you tax evade, you are either criminal traitor to USA or a smart anti-establishment guy based on whether asked person likes you or not. So it wouldnt be hard for Trump supporters to twist in their mind that him telling these promises shows his political ingenuity.

@Sommerswerd wow that was fast, has anyone asked anyone who voted for Trump if they care about this?

No need. They don't care and won't care. Conservative media is going to stop talking about inflation, groceries, prices, etc., negatively, as soon as Trump takes office, so Republican voters aren't going to see it as an issue anymore. All day today FOX has been alternating between the New Jersey drones, touting Trump's cabinet picks and gloating over the election, fantasizing about all the government agencies that are going to be dismantled. They are hardly even talking about the Healthcare shooter anymore. Not one peep about Trump flip-flopping on lowering grocery prices.

I have been listening to FOX News on the radio since the election and I have anecdotally observed that their mood/tone is much more upbeat, in fact its downright pleasant at times. They still tell non-stop lies of course, but they are jubilant, hopeful, optimistic and positive, whereas on CNN and even moreso on MSNBC, its all doom and gloom, fearmongering, whining, blaming, flip-flopping on their prior positions, pointing fingers... its very deflating and stressful to listen to. They are focusing obsessively on the Healthcare shooter, giving the obligatory platitudes of "no one condones violence/ thoughts and prayers to the victim's family, BUT this shows people are upset at the Healthcare system" and similar. The other coverage alternates between complaining about Trump's cabinet picks and trying to shame Republicans into voting against them (which obviously isn't going to work, because unlike Democrats, Republicans don't gaf about Sorkin) and pulling their hair out and gnashing their teeth about all the havoc Trump is going to wreak on the country with tariffs and mass deportations.

I find myself leaving it on FOX more, just because they all sound so happy. During most of the Biden administration, particularly prior to the election FOX News was un-watchable/un-listen'able (not a word), because they were so unhinged and negative... nothing but complaining and whining and grievance... doom, doom, doom all the time with a little side order of gloom... but mostly anger. They were so angry on FOX, it was just so stressful and maddening to listen to. Now its MSNBC that is unwatchable... too much pity partying and also, way too much capitulation and throwing up their hands and moving the Overton window rightwards. Its tiresome and stressful to listen to them crying and flip-flopping. CNN is a little better, but they're pretty much doing the same thing, except they spend a lot more time trying to debunk what is being said by Republicans and Conservative media.

On a humorous note, a couple days ago I was on a long drive listening to FOX News and I started thinking to myself "Wow FOX News is almost... nice... to listen to... so upbeat and stress free..." Literally, the moment I thought that, they immediately started fearmongering about the New Jersey drones story. Ranting and raving that the drones were some liberal and/or Biden administration and/or Iranian plot to assassinate or otherwise harm Trump... because New Jersey is "close to" where Trump lives. In fact, at the beginning of the story, they were actually claiming that the drones were sighted over Trumps house, but then they started walking that back to "close to"... I thought to myself "Ah... there's the FOX News I know and love (to hate)". :ack:

On reddit, the usual talking point in response is Hunter Biden.

You know, this started me doubting he will come good on his promise to end the Ukraine - Russia war in 24 hours.

The Gaetz report is expected to be released after the House completes its business for the year.

The House Ethics Committee secretly voted this month to release an investigative report into the conduct of former Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida, according to three people with knowledge of the matter.

The panel’s vote, which was reported earlier by CNN, paved the way for the release of the report after House members cast the final votes of the Congress this week and have left Washington to return to their districts, two of the people said.

It is an abrupt turnabout for the panel, which had previously declined to release the report. It came less than two weeks after House Republicans banded together to block a Democratic move on the floor to force the release of the report, instead returning the matter to the Ethics Committee for further consideration. The haggling on Capitol Hill over the report intensified after President-elect Donald J. Trump announced last month that he had chosen Mr. Gaetz to lead the Justice Department, prompting anger and concern among members of both parties on Capitol Hill who were aware of serious allegations against him.

Since the spring of 2021, the Ethics Committee had been investigating Mr. Gaetz over an array of accusations, including that he engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, shared inappropriate images or videos on the House floor, misused state identification records, converted campaign funds to personal use and accepted gifts that violated House rules.
Mr. Gaetz has denied the charges.

On Wednesday, he decried the news of the report’s impending release and noted that he had already been investigated by the Justice Department, which brought no charges against him. “The Biden/Garland DOJ spent years reviewing allegations that I committed various crimes. I was charged with nothing: FULLY EXONERATED,” Mr. Gaetz wrote on the social media site X. The Justice Department made the decision not to prosecute Mr. Gaetz after investigators concluded they could not make a strong enough case against him in court, in part because of a concern that some potential witnesses might not have stood up well under cross-examination, according to people familiar with the case who spoke about it at the time on the condition of anonymity.

In his post on Wednesday, Mr. Gaetz denied some of the central allegations against him, including that he had paid an underage girl for sex and solicited prostitutes, dismissing them as a distortion of youthful indiscretions. “In my single days, I often sent funds to women I dated — even some I never dated but who asked. I dated several of these women for years. I NEVER had sexual contact with someone under 18,” he wrote, adding: “My 30’s were an era of working very hard — and playing hard too. It’s embarrassing, though not criminal, that I probably partied, womanized, drank and smoked more than I should have earlier in life. I live a different life now.”

Mr. Gaetz abruptly resigned after Mr. Trump picked him to be attorney general, prompting House Republican leaders to argue that the Ethics Committee should not release the conclusions of its investigation, since Mr. Gaetz was no longer a member of Congress and therefore outside its jurisdiction.

Mr. Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration in the face of Senate opposition and is now set to join the conservative One America News Network as an anchor in January.

Trump: Making Canada the 51st state is a ‘great idea’

The U.S. president-elect continues to bait Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Donald Trump’s trolling again … or is he?

Early on Wednesday the United States president-elect suggested turning Canada into a part of the U.S., calling it “a great idea.” “No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? Makes no sense! Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!” he boomed on his social media platform.

It’s not the first time in recent days Trump has needled Canada and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, which was rocked by the bombshell resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. “The Great State of Canada is stunned as the Finance Minister resigns, or was fired, from her position by Governor Justin Trudeau,” Trump wrote Monday. “Her behavior was totally toxic and not at all conducive to making deals which are good for the very unhappy citizens of Canada. She will not be missed!!!!”

The mocking posts land amid tensions between the two countries after Trump threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods and accused the government of failing to address trade and immigration issues. After meeting with Trudeau at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida in late November, Trump started calling Trudeau the “Governor” of the “Great State of Canada.” “It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada,” he wrote. “I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all! DJT.”

The trusty old "I like beer" defense... It worked for Kavanaugh... Gaetz probably figures it will work for him too. Plus after the Access Hollywood Trump tape, and the Trump Presidency in general, sexual misconduct just doesn't seem to matter anymore. People just don't gaf. Arguably people stopped gaf with Clinton.

In any case, Gaetz new job at OAN is probably going to pay ten times what he made in Congress ($174k) or would have made as AG ($221k).

Went to McDonald's today. Got a small black coffee. $1.58. 8 months ago, it was $1.09. I commented "have another quarter, more than I expected", which was met with "people been complaining".

People seem to forget that Trump lost to Biden, in part, because his management was questionable. If prices continue to rise, that will be true again, and there will be strong Dem performance regardless of whether or not they perform or polish up their brand.

I read it and kind of agree but I also have a feeling like nah, not really. It's difficult to tell with Trump just what he is actually willing to do. There are substantial questions about the distance he is willing to travel.

He's lazy. If he encounters moderate resistance, is he going to diligently organize a movement of supporters capable and motivated to engage in paramilitary action? We shall see. That's work. Comparisons are occasionally made to Julius Caesar too, who led men into battle personally, whereas, in the riot Trump incited, he reportedly sat watching while sipping on diet Coke. His courage to do that may even be reasonably doubted.

When comparisons are made to Hitler or Mussolini, both guys have a diligence that Trump does not. I think consequently what Trump is likely to do is (probably) rightly perceived as a making of a sort of showmanship of politics. he may promise to deport millions, and will have genuine ideologues whispering in his ear how to do so, people who use the word "degenerate" regularly and with glee, but at the end of the day, he is likely to simply make a show of it and call it a day.

This is basically what I think the common wager of the Trump voter is. It's a flirtation with authoritarianism, made by people sympathetic to attacks on modernity(which shouldn't be stunning, it itself is often attacking values traditionalists cherish successfully), so it is dangerous, but claims Trump is fascist aren't really taken seriously by many people. Some ingredients are there but only strident anti-Trump partisans are likely to think he can actually turn them into a meal.

Assuming Trump actually steps down in 4 years, which... eh... The key to defeating Vance, or whoever the Republicans nominate will be the popularity of the candidate, not coffee prices.
