Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 252
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ //////////////////////////////////////

Quick links: Upload submission | Opening actions | After actions

Welcome to the 252nd game in the GOTM V Training Series! This Series allows new and old Civilization V fans to try out many features from Civ5's expansions and DLCs in a friendly environment. Participants are encouraged to post questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads (described below). Each game will specify the Civ you will play and the Victory Condition to strive for. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread.

MUST READ!
Our most sacred rule: Do not replay any turns!
If you make a mistake, accept it, and try to recover through game-play. To ensure fair play and prevent results exclusions, please set your Autosaves to "1 turn". In the event of a computer crash while playing, just reload to the previous autosave, then play on the same way you played it the first time. Please let Leif or me know (either in the forums or through Private Message) if you experienced a crash and how many turns you replayed.

Spoiler :

Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

TSG Announcement thread (this one): This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don't be afraid to ask questions). Its also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don't post any game-related info once you open and play the save. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread: This thread is used to discuss the game's opening decisions and strategies through the first 100 or so turns. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. We encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots, videos, or recorded/live-cast Let's Plays on other websites.

After Actions thread: In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state your victory/loss date (preferably in the post title) and describe your path to glory in this post! Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.
File Upload System
Spoiler :
We have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature)

Please note: you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs through October 1st 2024

Oh my, Deity Culture; the hardest victory type of them all. Ethiopia should help with not being wiped out. Just gotta figure out how to use religion to help with culture.

Start looks ok. Good mix of food and production. Two cows. Possibility of DF. I wish the silk were next to the cows, I’d settle there. But since it’s not, the question is to settle in place or move to the gems. I’ll move the warrior SE to the second cows to see if it’s worth moving to the gems.

In case someone is wondering how the UU works:

I haven't tested this, but I read somewhere that the Mehal Safari's bonus decreases by 3 percentage points for each tile away from the capital.

So +30% when it's in the capital, +27% in the first ring, and so on down to 0% ten tiles away.

Pretty weird UU if you ask me. I rarely ever fight with riflemen since they upgrade to GW infantry so quickly. But they do get to keep the bonus when upgraded.

What does everyone think about sacred sites? Stele is very good for sacred sites, but you're basically throwing away the UA and on deity spamming cities might be difficult depending on neighbours.

If you mean winning with Sacred Sites as the only (or main) source of tourism, I think in most games you'd need to do a lot of fast conquering for that to work better than a "traditional" culture victory. But even then there's a risk that you get beaten to faith buildings or the Reformation belief itself.

Sacred Sites as an additional source of tourism is okay I suppose, but imo you're better off spending the policies elsewhere - Aesthetics, Rationalism, ideology.

No idea how to handle deity culture victory. I suppose full Aesthetics isn't needed until the end game, but it's still six additional social policies I normally don't consider. Maybe only Rationalism 2 or 4? Skip Rationalism entirely?? Of course, Piety is good for Ethopia, but when and full Piety? Early war doesn't seem appropriate here - rather give AI time to build wonders (preferably wonders with theming bonuses but settling for Notre Dame wouldn't be bad). Tradition and prep for arties if neighbor spamming wonders? Liberty peaceful expansion for future museums (would the -33% social policy cost be enough to still get the policies I want if I go for 7+ cities)? I just don't know so I'll probably change my mind ten times or so.

Initial settle - wish there were a good way to scout closer to the gems. Might just go there and hope.

Not only the ability to city spam but also the ability to meet all the AIs fairly quickly - unless of course, get lucky and the distant AIs don't generate much culture. On Deity, it seems likely that neighbors would certainly DOW, so how to protect? I'm certainly not up for such an attempt, but maybe someone else could ... ?

It's very luck dependent on deity. Tried it with a practice game yesterday. I went piety and got my religion turn 55, but 3 faith buildings were already gone.

At least there is always the unmissable Grand Temple.(I presume you meant faith wonders.)

No, I meant then ones that give you tourism with Sacred Sites: Pagodas, Mosques, Cathedrals and what's the 4th one, Monasteries I think.

The AI are very fast to religion on deity, and they have a tendency to pick the beliefs you wanted for yourself...

Yes, they tend to be popular. I may go monarchy for quick steles - but that would make the many settlers needed for sacred sites expensive compared to Liberty.
