Welcome to the 261st game in the GOTM V Training Series! This Series allows new and old Civilization V fans to try out many features from Civ5's expansions and DLCs in a friendly environment. Participants are encouraged to post questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads (described below). Each game will specify the Civ you will play and the Victory Condition to strive for. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread.

MUST READ!
Our most sacred rule: Do not replay any turns!
If you make a mistake, accept it, and try to recover through game-play. To ensure fair play and prevent results exclusions, please set your Autosaves to "1 turn". In the event of a computer crash while playing, just reload to the previous autosave, then play on the same way you played it the first time. Please let Leif or me know (either in the forums or through Private Message) if you experienced a crash and how many turns you replayed.

Information about threads associated with each individual TSG - Must Read if you are new to the Game of the Month!

Please note:

Spoiler :

If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.
TSG Announcement thread (this one): This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don't be afraid to ask questions). Its also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don't post any game-related info once you open and play the save. Instead use the next thread.
After Actions thread: In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state your victory/loss date (preferably in the post title) and describe your path to glory in this post! Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
Spoiler :

We have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note: you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.
This game runs through February 15th 2025.

I've never played a game like this before, starting era medieval with extra units.

Does the AI start with the same extra stuff? Does starting era medieval mean you have all pre-medieval techs unlocked? Any policies?

You start with all Ancient and Classical techs and you get 200 Culture to spend when you settle your first city (first culture 25, second 30, third 60 and so on as usual). And as you can see, it is already turn 125.

Ok, thank you! Looks like fun, especially with England, straight to the fun part
That was the idea...

To be totally accurate, you will still have to grow your cities before the fireworks begin.

How so?

I had a quick look at this. A quick domination victory is impossible. No cheap archers and no xp to get to the crossbows (longbows in this case) with logistics..

A really slow science start, despite having all those free techs to start with.

And 3 spearmen to start, wouldnt be my choice...

The other civs also have advanced tech start, so even when longbows are finally researched, then they will be soon obsolete, though the range is always handy..

It seems that this game is almost forcing a naval combat strategy, or certainly advanced military units.

4 movement across water is a nice way to explore..

So, for my limited style of play, this scenario is impossible.

What am I missing?, why is this 'advanced' start actually an advantage for domination? Or perhaps it's not meant to be? That is the challenge.

I suspect that is standard for choosing the medieval start era. Before this game I had not played this option myself, but I have seen screenshots of it.

Given the map type, I'm assuming all capitals are coastal, so naval domination will almost certainly be quickest (also given the large map size).

Ships of the Line!

I love England and I especially love England on watery maps. Two of my most memorable games have been with this type.

For the start, I’ll move the spearmen NE, E and SE to see what’s around and give a hint of which way to move the second settler. The northern most settler will be the first and not sure if moving next to the mountain is a good idea or not. Probably not since it moves away from the stone. An observatory would be nice to get to SotL faster but not sure if it’s worth losing that 2f1p tile. But do we get extra tiles at the start of an advanced start? I think I remember we start with like 3 pop or something too? Will need to look that up.

Looks like a fun setup!

It’s a strategy game, after all, innit?

I haven't started the game yet, but I expect Longbowman will never become obsolete in this game. But it's small continents so I doubt Longbowmen are really that useful either way.

I expect the main reason we're starting in the Medieval Era is so we can see where the Iron is from the start of the game.

Damn, this is the first time I'm not finished with the previoust GOTM when the new one comes out!

I'm not a big fan of advanced starts. I've done one or two GOTMs with advanced starts, and they felt like it's a completely different game.

Was considering skipping this one but... England and Domination! Now THAT sounds like fun!

I always enjoy something different! The first 30 turns in and I’ve got a nice 3 city Liberty start going.

Nothing has topped the New Years 2024 game with the guided missle start though!

Maybe some month we could do a marathon domination game on deity where we start with a knight and see how many promotions we can get before the end of the game? I’ve tried to do a version of this a few times with Germany (hand axe ruin upgrade to knight).

This is a topic that I am happy to discuss. GotM245 (Germany/Emperor) was the first ever GotM game on Marathon speed, and fairly well recieved at that. My thinking was that we at least should have one game on Marathon, just because it is a feature of the game. Back in the days it was "common knowledge" that games on Marathon speed are too tedious for GotM. But if you and the other players of today are up for the task, I will do my best to generate something along those lines. We were not planning to have a game with Germany for 2025 though, but maybe another warlike civ could be as appealing?

A long game with a knight to start would be cool. A unit in a line that I don't normally use because they jus don't seem that good. As long as Atilla, Shaka, or Genghis isn't right next door to kill me before I have a chance to use it!
