Welcome to the 262nd game in the GOTM V Training Series! This Series allows new and old Civilization V fans to try out many features from Civ5's expansions and DLCs in a friendly environment. Participants are encouraged to post questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads (described below). Each game will specify the Civ you will play and the Victory Condition to strive for. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread.

MUST READ!
Our most sacred rule: Do not replay any turns!
If you make a mistake, accept it, and try to recover through game-play. To ensure fair play and prevent results exclusions, please set your Autosaves to "1 turn". In the event of a computer crash while playing, just reload to the previous autosave, then play on the same way you played it the first time. Please let Leif or me know (either in the forums or through Private Message) if you experienced a crash and how many turns you replayed.

Information about threads associated with each individual TSG - Must Read if you are new to the Game of the Month!

Please note:

Spoiler :

If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.
TSG Announcement thread (this one): This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don't be afraid to ask questions). Its also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don't post any game-related info once you open and play the save. Instead use the next thread.
After Actions thread: In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state your victory/loss date (preferably in the post title) and describe your path to glory in this post! Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
Spoiler :

We have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note: you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.
This game runs through February 28th 2025.

Perfect timing, I was just about to cook up a wide strategy for Rome. It's definitely not suited for a Culture Victory and it probably won't work on Immortal because I'll be too broke to purchase the buildings for my capital, but I'm just gna roll with it n have fun with it. I'm not expecting a very good result, but we'll see where it goes.

I thought Fractals was an island type map but it doesn't look like there's any coast nearby, I'm not too familiar, perhaps not.

Not a big fan of Rome. I rarely build Swordsman or Catapults, and I'm not sure if you can get Legions and Ballistas in time for them to be effective on Immortal.

I like Fractals maps though, and Culture Victories are always fun!

Probably gonna play science game until we have a solid tech lead, then conquer the Renaissance wonders from whoever built them.

Fractal maps can be vastly different. However, as far as I have experienced it myself, the norm seems to be one large landmass and one or several minor ones.

Culture on Immortal might be doable; a challenge for me, which is good, but a chance to do well. Will have to try and take advantage of the Roman UA, which can be quite challenging to utilize I understand. Large map will help, question will be to go Liberty and take advantage of the large map; or stay safe with Tradition.

Start looks good but not amazing. I'll move the warrior south to see what's there and see if there's any reason to move south one spot to settle since it will still have deer in the first ring. As usual, I'm tempted to settle on the lux, gold in this case, but moving there just to check is a bad move I'm sure.

I like the idea of letting the AI build the wonders and then taking them; building cultural wonders on Immortal is pretty hard so this is probably the way to go.

Thanks for that info, I'm definitely going to try my wide strat out in that case, let's see if I can make some adjustments to get a reasonably quick Culture victory

At best swordsmen sometimes ”come in handy”. I wonder if the legion is essentially any different.

Option 1: Full warmonger and keep the culture laggard around for a GM bomb. Pros - probably the faster strategy and definitely doable on Immortal. Cons - so much tedious unit movement and probably swimming to some far flung island. ‘So much death. What can men do against such reckless hate’ ~ Theoden of Rohan.

Option 2: Science empire build into NVC and Internet with limited local war hopefully for some useful early wonders and a later one to grab some great works. Definitely the safer bet. Option 1 can bog down if there is a tricky civ far away, especially on a large map.

Btw... does anyone ever build forts in Civ 5?
I do on the rare occasion. Just as an example EDGE game #2 had Shaka as a neighbour over fairly open terrain and I still had to secure some road connections in that area. Thus, the solution was 4-5 forts tight together manned with Pikemen (and some Pikes in reserve).

The mighty fort! Just don't ask me if they did any good
Spoiler Spoiler for GotM 257 :
Although I do think they would have protected my eastern flank from Dido if she had happened to attack. The northern front was just too wide for them to make a difference.
