TT03: Unholy Spanish Empire

i agree on exploration. Highlands, iirc, is like all the landmaps and very large comparitively. It may be tougher to find food rich cities, but we could take them from our nearest neighbors....and i'm itching to pay Gandhi back for last game :hammer:

I think Madrid should be farmed out to work all those hills and other resources, and RedDot should be Cottage-spamed. What's that other city we founded? barcelona?? Frank, can you post an overview pic for dotmapping for when i get bored here at work???

edit: Barcelona won't be much, but with the 2 golds and a corn, it'll be a smaller-sized commerce city.

Sorry Pholk, but we've got Asoka this time around, not Gandhi.

Turn 5 (1060 BC)
Tech learned: Archery
I convert our warrior stationed north of Madrid from a fog-buster to a barb-buster, moving him adjacent to that barbarian warrior who's been dancing around in the north.

IBT:
While defending, Warrior defeats (0.30/2): Barbarian Warrior

Turn 6 (1030 BC)
Research begun: Writing

Turn 7 (1000 BC)

IBT: Lord McCauley is obviously a poor judge of power:

Turn 8 (985 BC)
Seville founded

Seville begins: Archer to let it grow a bit.

Turn 9 (970 BC)

IBT: Mao offers an open borders agreement. I invite him in. Maybe his archer can help with the swarm of barb warriors descending upon Barcelona.

Turn 104 (955 BC)

So that's it. Here's a couple of overhead views for dot mapping. Enjoy!
Spoiler :

The northern view:

And southern view:

Alright, good going Frank, though i would've gone for Sailing before Writing (and i may change it, too). Those lighthouses will be good, and the galleys for quick movement along the lakes. it looks like we drew the "big lakes" setting, so we might as well use them to our advantage.

uhm, staring intently at the pics...judging from the screenshot, i can't tell if we've got either of those stones roaded ~ it looks like we don't?!?

It's too bad those two gems are so far from that Rice, but i'm thinking that strategically, over the next several turnsets, that we should focus on exploratory units and, once the Pyramids are done, expanding as much as we can afford.

i can't remember the last game i built pyramids in ~ Representation, i think, eh??

Well, this is my suggested crappy dotmap -

Spoiler :

BlueDot will use one gold and a cow, plus a couple of grassland and plains and maybe some terrain in the black.

YellowDot offers rice and some floodplains, and its on a desert hill as this is the best use for this hill, providing 1 extra hammer to the city and gives it defence.

EDIT: yeah pholk i think that representation will be best as our capital is a high food city so we can get some specialists going. maybe we should aim towards the Great Library?

The Stones to the E are definitely roaded (see the screenie in post #19).

Yeah, thanks for pointing me to that LB ~ it stills my heart a bit :D

I'd head for the GL if we have nothing else more pressing. I actually think that i would put the western dot up against the coast by the cows but it would depend no what other resources are over there.

On the other dot east near the rice ~ I wanted to stick a city SE of the capital to grab that fish and it could share those FPs with the capital.

What say the rest of you??

Another thing to keep in mind is that w/the Ridgelines terrain, they'll be only a few approaches to our cities with good chokepoints nearby.

On my ideas for stragedy: since i won't be able to do much regarding it, i may jsut set us up to to expand!

Hmmm... with the Highlands terrain, commerce tiles seem to be at a premium, so a Fishing village there might not be a bad idea. Still, it's awfully close to Madrid, and will only be able to produce only a few hammers/turn at best.

If we move YellowDot 1 tile E, we could make it into a semi-decent production city if we farm the grassland. (maybe even the floodplain too.)

that was my thought, but i would save it for the last city of our initial expansion. Being so close, maintenance will be minimal and we could work some of the farmed FPs to grow to whip some things there.

I've got and am playing shortly.

edit: Plaid ;) ~ report to come after my kids go to sleep

Inherited Turn:
Nothing much, i just hit enter.

T01/940:
I spy all those barbs over @ Barcelona.

I move our worker east to road those gems @ Madrid for an extra happy for good ol' Spain.

t02/925:
We defend against Barb 1 as the other two move closer. It looks as if the Warrior to our south is going to pillage our gold :( I also take our warrior and move him towards Barcelona to explore out that way and maybe bust some fog.

t03/910:
We defend against Barb 2. You gotta love founding on hills! After my very first SG, an AW one, I am head-over-heels in love (though aren't most people head-over-heels all the time anyway ~ unless somethings really wrong with you). Anway, with that win, i'm able to promote so i choose Com I figuring this warrior will be hanging out in our town from here to eternity.

t04/895:
Hah! the last barb attacks instead of pillaging :woohoo: Writing comes in and i open borders with everyone. So, I odn't think we have to declare war on the hindus upon meeting them, right? just eliminate them before liberalism??

I head for Sailing next :) lighthouses will be good

t05/880:
I farm the FP east of Barcelona for quicker growth both at Barcelona and the future city on the lake and also so that we can put some specialists into Barcleona ASAP ~ the library-2 scientists-GS trick will go well here.

t06/865:
Sally stops by.

As the Buddhist here, i'm guessing he's our new BFF (best friend forever).

t07/850:
I went to go whip the Pyramids, but realized we're not in slavery :crazyeye: we revolt, i whip, but then realize we can't swap until 5 turns after this now! oh well, we can also use the whip overflow for some defenders or explorers.

I also :whipped: the worker at Barcelona for a pop. i odn't normally whip for just one, but for workers, oblelisks or lighthouses, i make exceptions.

I also stopped here b/c we're now at 550 turns to go. No oen ever said us teers were good at math :p

In my early years of reign, Sevile was under threat of a hurde of barbarian warior,

which failed to fight up on the hill and lost the battle. The gurdian warior was promoted to Combat I.
In the same turn we've finished the Pyramids :goodjob: .

Madrid built a granary then started to work on a library, so we could assain scientists, which will be very helpful as we wont build so many cottages in this game. Also when time came I revolted to Representation. Barcelone completed a Barracks and started a Granary. Tech wise, we've finished Sailing then started to research Alphabet in our course to Litrature and TGL. When we'll finish the library at Madrid, with two scientists providing (2+3)2= 10 beakers to the city, plus the 25% of the library will give us a big bust in our tech rate and we'll finish resereaching Alphabet quite fast.
On the exploration side, one of our wariors was send to check out blue dot and found out some interesting stuff -

England!
The next player can choose whether he wants to whip the library at Madrid in his Inhereted turn or to wait for it to complete.
Some screens for dotmap -

and

I've played 10 turns.

I have always tried to live my life by one dictum: never get your ass higher than your head.

I propose we focus on building 3 new cities fast -- 1 on the western coast near England and the cows, 1 two tiles east and one tile north of the rice in the east, and one on the eastern coast near the gems. That will seal off the northern part of our portion of the map, leaving room for maybe 4 more cities north of us, either ones we settle or take by conquest or culture. A 4th city may be pholkhero's fishing village if we end up needing the fish for health.

Of course, all of this has to wait a few turn sets until we're able to beef up our military a bit? I think I hear barbarians sharpening up their axes just over that ridgeline.

I think we should :whipped: that Library, and whip everything we can as often as we can ~ esp at Madrid with all those food resources.
I agree with Frank that 3 or 4 cities would be best to get out . . . unless we want to take out someone very quickly :mischief: What we need to find, pretty desparately, too, are HORSES!!

It's too bad there's nothing else by those cows to the west. Maybe we should forego that?? I like founding by the rice and then further east by the gems. It would very nice to have those Elephants that are near Seville, too, in case we can't find horses.

If we want a city by the elephants, it should probably be our first priority because India is going to settle there soon. I left it out of my 3-city scheme because of the distance maintenance but on the other hand, it follows the wisdom of settling in the direction of your enemies.
