When police attacked with tear gases to protesters against demolishing of one of the few parks left in city centre in favor of a new Mall, they weren't expecting this to happen. People of Turkey said "Enough" to increasing brutality and fascism of the Government. it's been more than 25 hours Police are gasing whole Taksim district but people are still fighting, some even are walking from the Boshphorus Bridge to district. Protests emmerged in almost every city.

Here is an I-Report from CNN. Best place to get news about this is from Al-Jazeera as always though:

    http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-980179

There have been reports of police firing on military offices as well and at hospitals. Numbers of injured vary greatly right now

Apparently even Gala and Fernerbahce have got a little truce going on, with supporters from both sides taking place in the riots side by side

How do you think this will effect the president? A vocal opposition had been growing for a while, but this is the first real catalyst for change it seems

No kissing in public? That's a bit too much. If I had a more attractive body, I'd go protest naked. That ought to teach them bureaucrats in government.

So people of the world are finally to understand that democracy, so called, is nothing more than the power of an angry mob.

a long and boring of post of mine forms the basis of this one and had this thread not been , ı would be in that thread . That's why the languade is even weirder than my personal norms .

"apologies for consecutive posting , but the urge is quite strong .

even if the first temptation is to congragulate the Voice of Russia on its comments the new Taksim riots . Laughing with a certain manner at the suggestions that this could be the Turkish Spring ; and within 24 hours , talking of Revolution and warning the authorities on how brainless the 20 year olds are and how they can follow anyone .

no , it won't be a Revolution . The designated winners , the Jihad are still stuck in Syria .

serves Turkey too . A delay will certainly help the odds the UN Peacekeeping Forces for Turkey will be whodunited a bit before their proper application .

the entire riot thing stems from the smartness of smarties . Feeling they should engineer the environment so that the seperatists will command the entire Lefty Opposition in Turkey , the event at first was a farce . Designed to polish the not Rachel Corrie -as mentioned in the multi-spoiler post above- who arriveth and the evil tree eating dragons -erm- bulldozers stoppeth . Ye Olde English , ı know thee not , but who cares ? Of course , other parties had to arrive on location and steal some glory and one minor was the reason the Voice of Russia was so condescending . This minor party was founded by a former general who did well in the fighting 1990s but we ain't Israel , he doesn't get anything in the polls . Naturally he did get gassed enough to require hospitalization . The next morning comes and the not Rachel Corrie arrives again and the clashes once again stop . And no word on the general . Because it is like totally irrelevant that the press never mentions that "Terrorists" are respected while "Heroes" get kicked about .

then comes the trouble . The fabled White Turks , many of them living around the square get the impression that Democracy in Turkey is getting stronger and they certainly do not want a new mall to rise in the one single green spot for miles . They are not against malls per se , a few of them are certainly capable of shopping in London and Paris every weekend . So they come for a peaceful sit in . Police naturally does the thunder run at 5 o'clock in the morning to beat people and burn tents . This ain't Tahrir , right ?

there is this "civilized courage" in Turkish , when something is wrong one must make a point of it and shame is on the other party if it doesn't act with decency . Applicable only if the other party is deemed capable of acting with decency . You certainly don't see civilized courage against those youth gangs who , under the influence of glue sniffing , rob passerby in daylight ...

the people were incensed . The thing started to run away . So the not Rachel Corrie arrived for the third time . May God be praised , he was gassed ... Actually there is a proposal to make a play on his surname and call him Fuehrer , for he does have real wit and a charisma but ı think it's early , he hasn't stolen the Left yet ... In any case his plight has already proper media interest and a fellow MP gave a thundering speech for further attraction , woving revenge and so on . This second MP is the sole survivor of a "massacre" of the legendary urban guerilla movement after 1968 and he has enough experience in deflecting claims that he survived because he was the informant .

trouble doesn't ensue because it was the rich who got beaten up . But because they are not career revolutionaries . Their next of kin tend to be proffessionals as well . People who are capable enough to survive in the cut-throat business environment ; when such people start to talk you find it difficult to dismiss them out of hand , or their talk . Labour activists can find their 17 old daughters in intensive care units of hospitals , because some policeman fired a tear gas canister to the head of one from a distance that he could grab her . And so what ? If the media has her record that she had once distributed leaflets ? Do the same to someone in designer shorts and you will be "proud" of the police carrying the stricken to the ambulance . Any Labour activist can bring all sorts of defamations against the police officers who beat his daughter even after she was unconcious ; he is "proffesional" ...

the entire theory of "civil demonstration" revolves around getting the unjustifiable reaction from the authorities . You can see all sorts of tricks to goad the other party to react unjustifiably . Maybe it will be famous in the funny videos part of the web as this is written , but there was this well clad guy kicking the riot-truck and daring the police to water-cannon him . Maybe a professional revolutionary , maybe fooled by the presence of TV cameras he went too far and was hit in the face , flipping over , actually flying backwards in the air . Those who got gassed and kicked by the police for merely trying to save the single park within walking distance of their homes will not be joining at those people who cheered when the well clad guy fell on the ground , motionless . May those who cheer taste the same ...

and even the police was troubled at the defiance . One of them decided to show his mettle -when in front of TV cameras- by threatening the guards at the entrance of a military hospital in the city for they didn't raise some bars from the gate so that the riot truck could turn around . Military lives by regulations and can't do anything before some officer orders it , right ? The police did say he would throw them a gas grenade next time and a career NCO -as it seems- said then maybe they would throw something back . Being in uniform makes it obligatory , such defiance after all ... And then the news , all those text flowing under screen ... One reported that the police had raided some houses in some city and arrested 9 women and 3 kids , in addition to 18 dudes . In all probability a drug raid , but it doesn't look awkward at all in the land of the Democracy where everybody thinks 1984 is such a cool concept as long as they are the one who makes it happen to somebody else . "

I was tired coming from demonstrations in my first post now i'll try to make a longer post.
Current rulling party AKP has been getting more aggressive in last couple of years. They prisoned opposition journalists and politicians and several military officers on alleged coup attemp by an alleged organisation called Ergenekon. While i accept that a coup attemp was probable, the ongoing trial process is unlawful and unethical. And after 2010 referandum AKP galloping against a fascist dictatorship. Turkey has not been a real democracy but at least we had some freedoms and we're losing them one by one. The country is becoming more and more one person state. Police is out of control using gas in almost every occasion with no repercussions, actually they're encouraged to do it.
The last incident started as a normal protest against a mall on some of the last green lands in city centre with about 50 people. Police used gas and dispersed people. An excavator came and started to remove the trees. But something happened a parlimantery stood in front of excavator and stoped it. This attracted some attention and couple of hundreds of people went protesting so work has stopped. In evening most of the protester went to their homes leaving only a couple of dozens protesters on watch duty.
In the morning (at about 5) police gassed the park and excavators started again. But the same MP came and stopped it again using his immunity. and this attracted even more attention and a couple of thousands of people gathered. Even other parlimanteries from main opposition party came (including leader of the party) lots of celebrities were there. They read books to police. People who weren't able to be there send food to protesters. It was like a festival. and after 22:00 people who had to work went to their homes leaving a couple of hundreds of protesters on "watch duty" some MP's stayed with them to.
Yesterday morning at exact 05:00 policed gassed the park again but before gasing they closed all the exits so people can't run. A wall collapsed on people tried to escape park. And then hell loose, but government shutted the media down other then a couple of chanels no news about the events. Thanks to internet people can learn what's happening.
Why this is important? This is the first time people from all different ideologies are protesting side by side. Three major football clubs' fan groups decided to act together (and even they succeded to take back park for a while thanks to a coordinated attack). And in the evening something even more suprising happened people started to protest in other cities too. the protest are still in action, some 40.000 people crossed the boshphorus bridge walking at 4 am. from asian side to join the protest. Is this a revolution? No, not even in the broadest definition of the term. But It's the largest political protest since "resistance of june 15-16" in 1970. Will this be the end of erdoğan government. No, but i am hopeful that this is the begining of the end.

The thing that worries me about it is that there doesn't seem to be any good political opposition, I wouldn't count the CHP that way.

    I'm quite well aware.

That's why I prefer a Republic with checks and balances, indirect representation, and the rule of law. Direct democracy really is just two wolves and a lamb voting on the dinner menu.

and this is the link to that thread but ı must say it's all about the trees and just a bit about other things , considering the White Turks got their park back and went home . Leaving the detritus of the Anarchists so that the media can re-start spinning things . And yeah , this thread is also good ...

here is the daily rant :

the Taksim Square has this Atatürk Monument , making it the venue for celebrations of many Official Holidays and stuff , events the Old Republic conducted without much public exciment . The Leftists in the heady 70s made it an habit of much bigger events in the Square to stress they were stronger than the State ; then there was the bloody May Day of the 1977 . Now Taksim is a central theme of whatever constitutes the Left in Turkey . Such an attention made the place valuable for the Right as well , primarily by the prospect of taking it from the Left . This year's May Day saw the Left kept out of the Square by force , while a Labour Union -of the Yellow kind as the Left will inform you- had folk dances ; just like this latest episode seeing the practically Fascist party members having it alone as the Goverment was about to give up and order the Police out . They had their share of gas , in order to make it less obvious .

the Islamist attention to the Square -on quite similar terms of denial and a show of possession- used to center on the plans for the construction of a Mosque ; on Fridays people had to walk a lot to other places . Opposition to such construction became the hallmark of being pro-Secular . There are no moves for such lately , America advises otherwise and the PM intends to have his own Mosque on the shoreline of Bosphorus . A "Selatin Camii" as well , not only comparable to those ones built by the Ottoman Sultans but better to boot ... Thought the mall will surely have proper accomodation ; places for prayer are now required by the Law or something .

and this mall is a "evolved" idea as well . Since they couldn't build a mosque , the newly elites came up with the notion of re-building the Artillery Barracks once standing in area . The Barracks were the location where the "Rebellion of March 31st" started in 1909 , against the Ittihad ve Terakki which was the source of CHP , the Party of the State up to 1950 . In their non-stop string of victories against the Old Republic the newly elites have been somewhat spoiled ; so they came up with the idea of an ice skating ring . They were to skate in the barracks . Use of the skating in Turkish slang denotes being the active partner in sexual intercourse , anybody who "opposed" was to be the passive one . As it is as coarse as it sounds , there were new ideas : Lately a mall and a residence .

as reported this latest started as a political ploy to enable the seperatists to reach out to Turks ; the Mayor appears on TV to convince the entire Nation that the effort was just about a pavement covering 150 squaremeters . While it's hard to see why was it done in the middle of the night the resistance of the Locals was the turning point , as pathetic as it was . Whatever victory there is in this , it belongs to the tree hugging losers who collected empty gas canisters from the lawn and put them into garbage bags as the Police was gassing them ; allow me to avoid the technicalities .

public reactions in such events are not easily calculable , as people saw others resisting they too took courage to do the same . The area regularly sees "Anarchist demonstrations" and shop owners regularly suffer broken windows . A pastries shop operated in the regular way and closed down and was protested . The next day saw them offering free cakes to people as the demonstators this time were their regular customers . This is why the Police was unable to assert control . They regularly outnumber the Anarchists and nobody says much when Robocops kick the cr_p out of window smashers ; but real masses take a lot of beating .

there has been an impression on the Goverment . It must be practically the first time in some 5 years that the PM "pleaded" . For the demonstrations to stop ; otherwise he talks only in imperatives . And he will tolerate the trees in Taksim , exactly 563 of them excluding the 5 "martyred" to be replaced by 50 others planted elsewhere , if the AKM building is demolished . The AKM is the Atatürk Culture Center , an architectural monstrosity as far as the generally accepted ideas go . He will do a much better Operahaus that shows the glory of the new Turkey under the A-K-P leadership . This deal making attitude possibly comes from the fact that the Military didn't rise in Rebellion ; the coup-plotters have been blamed only once . And in place of the mall , there can be a city museum . Considering my negative experience of working in one , ı have been personally advised to avoid making any comment on that ; but the PM is adamant in building the Barracks . The newly elites take pride in being the active , they can't afford any perception of being anything else .

similarly the Congregation advises easy-going ; the spiritual leader dude told his flock that God will punish the demonstrators . Considering Police has been tough going for years , ı don't think it makes much relevance that Congregation members in the Police ranks might have been extra tough to get the people against the Goverment ...

regarding foreign attitude ı don't think there are much of an effort to contain this . Syria is stuck , the Irresuction have been threatening that they will go under if weapon deliveries don't start immediately . A distraction but those who pay attention will remember it's just the Jungle Infantry yet . And the Zero Sum Game is eagerly expected .

as such they were ready to run and there was no sight of an US Marine Expeditionary Brigade ... This is good enough .

demonstrators have no means of identifying chemical weaponry and a Police car was burned , while the Police was around .
