gold would be called Kızıl in the horsebandit days , which has become red over the years , elma or apple represents the domes over churches , so big cities with big churches with goldebn domes are targets for horsebandits to plunder , so the Greek perception of it is entirely against YOUR benefit , now that Istanbul was one and Vienna was one and Rome was one "Kızılelma" back in the Ottoman days .
I am not sure how the term got started here, yet in common parlance it seems to just mean 'origin' (and is only used in the context of Turkey). Probably (?) not having the same etymology as the turkish term for big cities, although it sounds plausible it might. I have to suppose the apple got tied to Turkey due to the red colour of your flag, but I haven't researched it and this is just a guess.
If we go by it meaning an original "big city", however, then an obvious reference would be to Iconium, given that was the first seljuk state which the byzantine empire itself set up (in the hope it would act as a buffer against more incursions of nomadic people in Anatolia).
In that respect, if one would treat said prophecy as something of substance (so it is a theoretical discussion), it could refer to 1/3 being a state around Iconium/Konya, the westernmost and eastermost thirds lost.
