*chuckle*

Real life events huh?
What about shaka's impis taking out a platoon of English riflemen? (I forget the name of the battle).

What about non-military?
Bird-flu has spread to (capital). (Equivalent of city's water supply being poisoned. :p )

Or something more recent.
America's economy has collapsed! (Suffer loss of banks in all cities)
:D

I could think of more but it's too early to try being witty. ¬¬

In a van, down by the river.
Pearl Harbor:
Fighters from Japan's carriers attack American battleships... battleships somehow sink even though fighters have a cap on land/sea based damage. Maybe America disbanded them?

From Wikipedia:
The Battle of Isandlwana on 22 January 1879 was the opening, major encounter in the Zulu War between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. A 20,000 strong Zulu army equipped mainly with spears and shields annihilated a mixed British and native force armed with modern firearms and artillery. 850 British soldiers and around 450 African soldiers in British service died.

WWI: Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia that has a defense pact with Russia that has a defense pack with France. Germany also declares on Russia and therefore France. Then they attack Belgium which has a defense pact with Great Britain. Then the allies bribe Italy into the war in 1915 and the US declares on Germany and Austria-Hungary after having caught a German spy (Zimmermann Telegram) and had a event where a German sub sank an American ship, plus of course the "you declared war on our friends" penalty.

Gustave Eiffel builds a large structure of bare iron girders named the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It is regarded as an eyesore by many Parisians and loathed by anyone in the contemporary art world. The ugliness was especially potent because a beautiful statue was just given away. It would eventually become one of the most recognizable monuments in the world. Also, somehow, it gives free radio towers in all cities.

I know this is slightly off topic, but I enjoyed writing it.

Yeah, that's the one. Regardless of the numbers it's still an embarrassing loss. >_< Credit where it's due though. Well done Zulus. Course, old Blighty has suffered other embarrassments. Didn't the Dutch steal the Prince's ship right out of the Thames? :D You can just picture a load of stoned Dutchmen giggling as they sail away in the boat.
"Hee hee, they didn't even try to stop us!"

Who says war can't be fun. ^^

And, when the Dutch sailed up the Thames with brooms affixed to their masts, signifying that they had swept the English from the seas. Obviously, Dutch preeminence didn't last long.

^^ We love you really. Shuffle back on.

An interesting random event would be a kidnapping! :O <civ> has kidnapped one of your prominent noblemen and his holding him for ransom.
Pay the ransom immediately! (gold cost + some other bonus ¬¬)
We are too pressed to do anything about it. (Noblemen dies, -1 hap in all cities)
And some other third option halfway between the two. ¬¬
Maybe a turn of anarchy or two instead of -1 happy, that is a bit harsh. :p
