When a game is started hit "Esc" button and a commands screen comes up on the right side of the monitor. Use the mouse to click the options button. Once options has been selected 4 pages (i think) appear. At the top left the pages are labeled. I forget the page label but it says something like audio. Click on that and you can turn sound from different sources on or off and adjust the volume for specific sounds. For example I cut the music off and turn down the speches to about a quater of normal volume. Or you can turn all sound off with the master switch.
The commands in this section will carry over, on the same laptop, to your next game so you won't have to reset it every time. Dang if they ain't just the smartest little game makers I ever did see.
Go to the program files and, after of coarse backing it up first, deleat or rename the music you dont want. I have not tried it (that civ music is so cool, I used it at my main page) but it could work. If you dont know what program files are, please ask.
