Turn off religious/diplomatic victory?

I've had space race and culture victories in BTS and really wanted to get a religious/diplo victory in BTS.

So I've done a lot of reading on this board for advice and asked for leaders etc... I've played a few games but didn't finish them and don't know if I will.

One conclusion I've come to is that religious/diplo victory is very flawed. I really think they need to take a look at this and fix it.

I've read some horror stories about the AP that fortunately hasn't happened to me. And it seems the UN is really just another domination victory. In fact, in one of my games, I could've achieved this if I just got 1 or 2 more vassals.

So I'm not going to bother with this victory type until it gets fixed and am seriously considering turning off the victory because it's unrealistic and doesn't work.

What do you guys think? Or should I still give it a go.

The diplomatic victory can just be a poor mans domination (ie, get big enough, and vote yourself winner of the world) but you can do it "properly". I don't have any help for you on the AP victories yet...... just the old fashioned UN victories.

Check out kylearan's non-violent ghandi game. At the end, he's small, he's weak... he's behind on tech.... his cities are rubbish with very little culture or production... but he managed to pull of a diplomatic victory.

I've managed to win a few games in similar style but without beelining for all the religions like Kylearan did... or handpicking non-warlike opponents. I think it's only possible on certain games. You need to have a very dominant religon. If you find yourself on a continent with 5 civs and 1 religon.... then that'd be the idea game to try a "true" diplomatic victory. If your continent has 5 civs and 5 religions, then it's going to be a lot harder.

It's possible, but that doesn't mean it's a lot harder than it needs to be. The one time I did it I gave in to every demand, every, favor and said yes to every war (note: This was pre-BTS, now that the AI fights itself a lot more often, I don't know if this would work very well). In the end, the guy we ganged up on (I want to say Alexander, but it's been a loooong time...) was on another continent and the AI wasn't smart enough to actually conquer him. So I was able to take most of his cities, increasing my own votes above the thresh-hold to win.

I've done it alot.. a few times by accident, I wanted to see if the world love me and I said yes.

Last time I won was BtS, and I had just conquered Babylon, and the cost had been killing me, so I turned it into a colony, the next it pops up what to vote for i say what the helkl go for diplo, I abstain.. Next turn... I won. It was thru AP and my colony had every city Jewish, and my two allies hadm ost cities jewish, so when the vote came up, they voted for me as well as a few others with barly any jewish cities, I had 5 Civs say Yes, 7 say no, and 1 Abstain(me) I won by 30 votes lol. I was so PO, because I didnt want to win I just wanted to see if they loved me, and they did lol

Thanks. But mostly I think it proves my point that diplomatic is not a true victory type.

It's interesting that you mentioned colonies. I've been trying diplo on pangea or terra maps with lots of civs and close to borders. I'm going to try on an islands or archipelago map and see what happens. Would give me a chance to really try out the Dutch also. This will probably be my last attempt even if I succeed. I still remain convinced that there are too many flaws in these victory types that need to be fixed. I'm also uncomfortable with the idea of voting yourself for the win. Sorry, that's not a victory.

I can win a diplo victory every time pretty much...they are so easy...and I mean the real way, not just voting myself into office.

Just choose your friends wisely. Make friends with the strong civs and crush the weak ones.

In my most recent game as the Mayans I was able to get an AP Diplomatic victory without declaring war or having war declared on me.

Takes a little bit of luck but it is quite possible.
