Turn 158 - 230 BC
Started settler in Babylograd, there still room on the coast.
Also started 4 axes toward Hittite, the barb city
Decided to start researching Masonry, math, construction – gonna need catapults

Turn 159
Trade Meditation to Pericles for Masonry – We start Math
Trade Meditation to Zara for 60 gold
Trade wheat to Pericles for corn, no difference for us except maybe better relations
Can see that Heliopolis is garrisoned with two untrained archers

Turn 160
Capture Hittite, 91 gold, and a worker, lose one axe – start monument
Can see Pi-Ramsesse is garrisoned by one spear (combat I)
Trade Priesthood to Zara for 100 gold, up science to 100% to reduce cash before someone demands it.

Turn 162
Can trade Alphabet to Joao for sailing but its such a rip off, I’ll hold off a little

Turn 163
Finish road to Hittite

Turn 166
Trade priesthood to Pericles for 70 gold
Trade Alphabet to Joao for sailing, better than nothing

Turn 168
Finish Math start Construction (12 turns at 100%)
Port Knyaza finish monument start barracks

Turn 169
Coppack finish chariot starts archer
Chariot scouts southern Egypt

Turn 171
Zara demands we change to Judaism, can’t do it.

Turn 172
Alexandria garrisoned by two axes (combat I and woodsman) and +20% culture defense
Cancel corn for wheat to Pericles, trying to get a little gold too but he won’t have it, got open borders instead

Turn 173
Don finishes monastery start Buddhist missionary
Memphis has a combat I sword and archer with +60% culture defense

Turns 175
Cow for corn with Genghis
Hittite finish monument start archer

Turn 177
Finish construction, start calendar
Biblyograd finishes settler starts on catapult
Settler heads toward north coast
Trade Pig to Boudica for deer

Okay got 5 axes and will start catapults now sow we can capture Pi-Ramsese from Egypt’s north coast, then will hopefully capture Alexandria. Can’t hold Alexandria so will have to raze and plant our own city nearby. I’m pretty sure we can beat the AI in a war but I can’t be sure how long before Caesar would give us peace, the danger is always that he’ll get allies. There is also the economic trouble that war causes, but I’m pretty sure it’s our only way forward from this point.

Fingers crossed next turn set will be this weekend, maybe Saturday June 4th.

Okay here is the situation as of 70AD, highest to lowest scores

Joao II/Inca________SE______9 cities______Buddhist____pleased
Zara/Portugal_______Far W___13 cities_____Jewish______cautious
Pericles/Rome______NE______8 cities______Jewish______annoyed
Tokugawa/Sumeria__E_______11 cities_____Buddhist_____pleased
Julius/Egypt________W_______6 cities______Jewish______cautious
Brennus/Aztec ______Far SW___?__________Hindu_______annoyed
Genghis/Germany___S_________11 cities____Buddhist_____pleased
Boudica/Ottoman____Farther SW_5 cities_____Jewish______cautious
Us__________________________5 cities_____Buddhist

We are 7th place for GNP and land area but dead last in everything else. Not gonna be easy.

I think I’ve come up with some better ideas for the next turn set, let me know what you think.

I was thinking that a new city on the coast would take a while to get working due to all the jungle and night cost as much as 4 gold/turn in maintenance. I was thinking a new city much closer to Coppack might work out much better. We’d probably save 1gpt on maintenance but also since Coppack will be working production tiles, the new city can work those cottages right away. Not exactly sure which tile though but marked Y for now. We will also need a name. Mesopotrovsk is one idea.

My war plan was to take Pi-Ramsese because it’s most vulnerable, but it also isn’t worth much. It has the same problems of high maintenance and lots of jungle. Memphis is what we really want, it’s Egypt’s iron source and a religious capitol (makes maybe 25 gpt, that’s about 30% of our GDP in one city). Unfortunately it is only 2 tiles from the capitol and has bunches of culture, that means it gona be tuff to get and hard to hold.

Let me know if you think this plan might work. Rather than capture Pi-Ramses, I’ll use a choke strategy and send two archer/axe teams to wander the hills and forests pillaging tiles. Right now our production is about the same as Egypt. A axe/archer/chariot team will do the same in southern Egypt and try to pillage iron. We have those units now and so can begin as soon as they walk there, about 5 turns. While that goes on we will build catapults and axes for the real invasion. Alexandria is not too tuff but holding it would divert forces so I’m thinking of razing it. Memphis will need maybe 4 catapults and 8 axes, or about 700 hammers worth of stuff. That would take about 30 turns for us to build if we don’t rush or chop.

Correction, I missmarked the screen shot. I am thinking of settling in the forest tile just south west of Y.

Turn 178 70 AD
Moved units to according to revised attack plan, need some archers up front.
Trade wheat to Tokugawa for silk 
Made some tile adjustments to emphasize production but to allow growth.
Dropped science to 70%, we’ll need money for the war.

Turn 179
Tokugawa offers open borders accepted.
Tokugawa declares war on Joao, the last thing we need is a superpower war in the east while we try our dangerous gambit against Egypt in the west. Eventually we’ll have to choose sides which is too bad. I’d be inclined to choose Tokugawa because he is far too dangerous for us to be at war with. I’ve increased espionage against him so we can get his demographics and make sure.
Coppack finishes archer then starts another, pillage teams continue to move into positions, but our plans may be pre-empted.

Turn 180
Yup according to the power graph we’d have to side with Tokugawa, it will be unfortunate though.
Founded Mesopotrovsk, started granary. Workers are chopping forest SW of the city so any counter attacking Egyptians don’t have cover.

Turn 181
Units in place for war with Egypt.
Science down to 60%

Turn 182
]Genghis declares war on Joao. That makes things much easier for us, we can now side with the aggressors and be pretty safe from any reprisals.
Declare war on Egypt, capture a worker.
Trade construction to Genghis for Calendar start metal casting

Turn 183
Tokugawa asks us to declare war on Joao, unfortunate but we have no choice.
Coppack finishes archer, starts Axe

Turn 184
Egyptian catapult attacks our pillagers in south on way to Iron
Get 4 gold from pillaging banana plantation by Pi-Ramses
Pericles demands we cancel deals with Genghis, can’t do it.

Turn 185 175AD
Spread Buddhism to Hittite

Turn 186 190AD
Pillage Egyptian Iron mine, get 8 gold
One of the pillage teams have to come back to head off Egyptian swordsman going for Mesopetrovsk.

Turn 187 205 AD
Hittite finishes archer build barracks
Pillage road

Turn 188 220AD
Pillage Egyptian mine and road, 8 gold
Pillage Egyptian plantation and road, 4 gold
Egyptian Swordsman attacks archer and dies
Babylograd finish catapult, start spear, need some defence at Don
Coppack finish axe start catapult
Hittite finish barracks, start archer

Turn 189 235 AD
Pillage hamlet, 16 gold

Turn 190 250 AD
Pillage road
Pillage cottage, 7 gold
Change production in Port Knyaza from barracks to granary, probably should have done it long ago, the place isn’t growing and now has sickness too, oops.

Turn 191 265AD
Egyptian axe dies attacking our archer
Finish catapult in Babylograd start another
Sent archer/axe pillage team to Egypt
Sent catapult axe team to Alexandria to begin bombardment

Turn 192 280 AD
Pillage road in Egypt

Turn 193 295AD
Don finishes Buddhist missionary, start barracks
Change production to increase pop growth in a few cities

Turn 194 310 AD
Finish axe in Coppack start another
Pillage plantation and road, 1 gold
Bombard Alexandria
Joao has 4 chariots heading toward Don, Tried to negotiate peace but he won’t do it unless we give him the city
Pop rush spearmen in Don and Babylograd

Turn 195 325 AD
Finish catapult in Hittite, start barracks
Joao doesn’t cross the border
Axe destroys Egyptian catapult
Pillage road

In two turns we’ll be in position around Alexandria with 6 axes, two catapults and a chariot, do we capture it or raze it? Alexandria has little culture of its own but so near the religious capitol of Memphis it might take a lot of units (fiddling with world builder makes me think we would need 6 garrison units to guarantee against a culture flip). Instead I can switch Hittite to a settler and rush it.

Our manufacturing was the same as Caesar but rushing set us back and since this is emperor level he would have still out produced us anyway, but we do have him on defense and I think it will eventually work.

Screanshots show the action in the West and the danger brewing in the East

SAVE REMOVED - CORUPTED

Not exactly sure when I'll get a chance to play the next turn set but sometime over the weekend for sure. This is a demogame though so if anybody else is interested in giving it a shot please post when you're able to play.

The latest save wouldn't run so I have to go back to 70AD and replay the last turn set too. That is pretty upsetting to me and its already late so I'll just do them both tomorrow.

Okay war weariness is barely registering so I say lets press on to Memphis the real prize which gives us a big economy boost and iron. Egypt is still stronger than us, but our production is slightly higher, but with catapults and war chariots now it won’t be easy. If we make peace Caesar will give us Metal casting and 35 gold. We can wait two more turns (when we are set to finish Metal anyway and see if he has a better deal for us, but I’m done for now. Looking forward to another turn set later this week.

Yup just a couple turns, this game is nothing but bad news. We can make peace with Egypt and get some gold, but then we still have to fight a rather pointless war with Germany. Please feel free to post any advice 'cuz I'm kinda stuck. I'm also posting the save in the strategy forum to ask for input.

I'll be away from the computer two week so I can't play until June 30th at best, but anyone else feel free to give it a go.

Okay, got a little help from the strategy forum but things still look mighty grim. Check out the "DG IV Thy Name is Victory" thread to comment on the new strategy. Next turn set planned for July 1st or Saturday.

Wow what a game, a short TC chock full of bad breaks. I guess I'll wait 10 turns then hit Egypt again and take those 3 northern cities. That should give us enough votes to inoculate us from any further Apostolic Palace snafus. We can then strike east I hope.

Thinking of playing a few turns. The plan is to use the golden age to pump out some troops to attack Egypt in the north while defending against Germany in the south. Diplomatically will try and stay on good terms with Zara and Pericles in east and west. My main concern is that the AP will prevent us from fighting a succesful war because Egypt is Jewish too.

Other options might be to attack Aztecs but their are not geographiclly convenient so even if we win we will have a boarder that is subject to cultural threats and hard to defend not to mention lots of coruption.

Alas it is truly over. I spent our golden age building military units to invade Egypt and sucking up to all the other Jewish states to hopefully survive the next AP vote. Zara made me cancel deals with Tokugawa (our NW neighbor) and demanded all our money. Then just as our GA finished and we discovered gunpowder Inca, Germany and Egypt (SW, SE, and NE neighbors) declared war on us first. The first two brought considerable forces and we have no money to upgrade to musketmen anyway. On top of all that we still have considerable unhappiness from the last AP vote and no trade routes so unhapiness is rife. Never before have I lost more thuroughly.

So who wants to propose settings for the next game?
