Turn Slowness

Hey folks

I like playing on Marathon, as I am sure some other people here do too... The one thing that gets me is that during the later ages, the turns take so damn long to process that it becomes maddening on Marathon, although would be damn annoying even on Epic or Normal.

My computer is fine (easily enough to run civ IV) so I was wondering how YOU folks dealt with it? Do you all have dual core computers? Do you read a book while waiting? Do you have some super secret method to eliminate it? Are you simply not an impatient person like me?

Tell meh!

Nevermind gamespeed, what size maps do you play on? How many Civs usually populate your worlds?

If you reduce either/both map size and number of civs, your performance will improve - especially late game.

Well, if you're spending a lot of time "Waiting for other civs" it probably means they have a huge army/navy set on explore and are taking their turns just wondering around aimlessly. If it gets too frustrating you can go into WB and delete their Caravels, Triremes, or other obsolete units that are just wasting your time. The same goes for your Civ if it takes too much time for that little red light to turn green.

Large/14 is unreasonable if your computer is close to the min specs. This game was designed with the standard settings in mind.

But, yes, I do have a dual-core.

It's because the new AI takes more resources to compute. I play on Terra or Pangaea on Standard/Normal all the time, and I've been having a hard time finishing games due to the incredible slowness around the time Liberalism hits.

P4 1.77, 2 gigs, and still slow as hell later.

i have a dual core proccesor :mischief: :mischief: :mischief: but usually i play between dual and standered with 18 civs

Well what is your CPU? If it's anything in the range of my former Athlon 64 3400+, I don't know how you can cope with it! Must've taken me an hour or so just to get to mid-classical age on that Athlon.

2 gigs of RAM and 2.8 gigs P4. Should be more than enough.

Oooh... ouch. I don't know how you can play with that cpu. Must mean I'm even more impatient than you!

Also, just because a CPU is dual core does not mean it is automatically faster, though I assume you know that.

How do I cope with the long turns? Well my turns aren't long (or that long)! My OC'ed e6300 handles 18 AI Marathons well enough compared to my old Athlon. :D

1 GB ram and 1.7 ghz.
Ye, I am used to wait between turns. In CIV3 I had to wait even more to play world maps with a mod...And believe me, I the only thing worthy to play CIV3 for were the mods of world map!

Standard maps take me a long time in BTS - if the game is going badly I won't complete it, yet I can run Huge maps in Warlords in less time between turns.

Do you have "show friendly moves" box checked? This is the main cause of long waits between turns. Your computer is of a good spec. I only ply marathon/huge maps, and don't get much turn lag at all.

Nope.......

Dunno then...I suppose "slowness" really is a subjective experience anyways. Its not like you can post a save game and others can test for you..I always quit right out to desktop every 3-4 hours, reload, and that helps speed things up a little. A huge/marathon game for me, takes on average 20-30 hours, but thats me playing slowly at times, not the game....

All this time I thought the pause in between turns was for eating munchies...now I learn my computer is crap.
