Because of corruption tapes of prime minister twitter is banned. We can still access it via simple dns change. But it's problem for 3G with unrooted smartphones. As we say in Turkey "Fear does not prevent death" (it's a loose translation.)
edit: that's the effect of ban.

Is it really such a great loss? Sure I see the problem with the abridgment of freedom of speech that this ban implies; but is Twitter itself a necessity of free speech?

There's a huge corruption scandal going on and some people in government leak government officials phone call tapes (Including prime minister) via twitter and youtube. Youtube removes the videos but they're uploaded and distributed by twitter quickly. So government tries to prevent this.

Twitter has proven to be the fastest predictor of news that going to blow up. Trying to cover up a scandal killing Twitter would help more than you think.

Of course but that requires at least a tiny bit of technical knowledge, at the very least it can slow it down a bit and set a horrible precedent for a democracy.

Censorship of any kind is bad, but the fact that twitter has been used a lot in organising anti-gov rallies in many countries makes this even worser. (how do i english, its late here)

Without Twitter, I wonder how did anti-government protesters managed to do anything.

Obviously, you'll use snail mail to send your excrements! Which will trigger one of the most bizarre revolutions in recent times, caused by the relic that was sent by the Western Gods to the inferior humans living in Turkey.

100 years later, your excrements will be presented in a museum.

And they'll be a fake. At some point of time, a team of criminologists who got fired due to being time-travellers and possibly interlopers from a different Universe with nothing better to do will run an investigation on them, and as shocking as it seems, in the end, the excrement was yours all along, despite all the suspicion.

Do I need more compelling proof that learning when a man is crapping is in fact, the most important information there is?

In other news, banning Twitter won't exactly work as intended. It's too late, mister Erdogan. The time you let the Internet, that was your downfall.

Also: What is going on with the 'good cop/bad cop' routine between Gul and Erdogan?

I wouldn't be surprised if Erdogan would be outraged as news channels show how to bypass the ban he has created for twitter.

Turkey might as well ban any mass media at this rate.

Maybe they will pull a Venezuela/Bolivarian republic (BRV) and became officially an ART (Ataturkian republic -of- Turkey) ;)

But i doubt they will choose ART, so KRT?

Will this move not also alienate Erdogan-supportes? Or is this political struggle so bipartisan at this point that winning the struggle is all that counts?

And I tend to agree with you. If this were to happen in the US, I would be outraged even though I don't use Twitter. However, I have decided to play Devil's Advocate here by posing the question of whether or not social media is a necessity of free speech.

I think we all agree that social media definitely enhances freedom of speech, but is it essential to the existence of free speech?
