People turn on TVs to get news?
It is possible that the BPD may not want to release offical information about having a suspect in custody at this time. The NY Post may yet be right.
Menino is set to speak in about twenty-five mintues.
That's what 24 hour media and a constant stream of threats from terrorists, maniacs, and rogue states can do to you. Just remind yourself that only 6.7 x 10^-9 % of the population ever gets harmed in any of these events.
Premature news - Will take a while for a clearer story to emerge
I don't often excuse them, but in this case, they might just simply be human.
I know that for me, one of my coping mechanisms are to analyse as much as I can. It helps pushing my emotional thoughts away.
I'm not the problem. I'm acutely aware of that fact and constantly preach that.
It's the crackdown and the resulting military adventures I fear. This country will not be worth living in anymore if we have another 9/11.
I'm not afraid of being killed by a terrorist. If that happens then it happens. I might also be run over by a semi-truck or die in a plane crash. What I am afraid of is the virtual police state we might live in if we have another 9/11 or two.
Yea seriously, for the love of god people.
Terrorism is terrorism, that's true, and the results are the same regardless of who did it. However, as Cheetah pointed out (and this is what I was getting at with my comment), reactions are going to be vastly different. Both in terms of official government response as well as the emotions of the American people overall.
+1. I tried, now I'm in your camp.
Yeah, that is right. Either way, I see it as a damn shame, that's really what I was going for.
And it would be rather unfortunate if it was an Islamic group. People might demand more boots on the ground.
I don't know. This isn't nowhere near the magnitude of the 9/11 attacks, and large parts of the American people are quite tired of war by now.
If this was a foreign attack - and especially by an Islamic group - then consequences will be far more complicated. But there's still a long way from that till an expansion of military hostilities.
Unlikely since I'd imagine it'd be more a "lone wolf" type Islamic terrorist than an organized attack. Like that failed Times Square bomber.
Where are you getting this? Update from the Boston Globe fifteen minutes ago: 2 dead, 90 wounded.
You guys are probably right.
Really?? I thought I read that number in this very thread.
That was actually good to hear.
Not that two deaths and many severely injured people aren't still quite bad.
I've been posting the official BPD count, which only has 2 dead. There was another source that claimed 12 dead, but that was 12 dead and wounded early on when injuries were still being reported.
I remember plainly a political cartoon after 9/11 that showed a plane about to crash into the towers. A panicked man inside picked up a phone and said "Quick, send a civil libertarian!"
The message of the cartoon was clear: Civil liberties are irrelevant when the plane is bearing down on YOU. I so desperately fear a fresh resurgence in this mentality when it has barely had time to wear off.

Reports of a Saudi national under guard at a hospital. I hope that's just a mixup.
