It's primarily because the when the Puritans left England (you know, the guys that banned music playing in public and just about anything fun) they came to America. Yes! Escape religious persecution so that we are free to religiously persecute here! No irony whatsoever!
Aw, the Puritans were not really that bad.
They banned a lot of the revelry that was prevalent at the time, but they did so in the best devotion to their faith and God and believed that what they were doing was going to help people reach a better state of being. In fact, I suggest if you ever get time and the fancy strikes you, read the book A Revolutionary People at War by Charles Royster. It's not about the Puritans per se, but it about the American Revolution and deals with the religiosity that the Americans inherited from the Puritans, and their attitudes when they declared independence. Really interesting stuff.
